Didn't motherboards have ISA on them as late as 2001~2002? And some might still have legacy ports (like gameport, serial, parallel, PS/2, etc.), but I think for the most part, they've mostly switched to USB.

Technically, as crazy as this sounds, it should be possible to put a converter that would allow PCI to use PCI-e slots, solely by nature of some board between the two that deals with the different slot sizes...

I mean, if the problem with PCI vanishing ever becomes a huge one.

I've still got two free PCI slots. I'm not using the device occupying one at all (a 56k modem, remember when I needed that? oh lord.) either.

Getting an older sound card wouldn't be much issue for me - it'd actually be the newer cards that'd pose a problem. I do have a PCI-e slot, but it's not true x16 and I'm using it for a video card anyway (which, honestly, seems far more important).

How in the world would the card still fit in the case with an adapter wedged under it?

...One would have to be a bit creative on that part.

My experience is just that if they manage to make a freaky adapter to use a CPU that isn't even in the same family as the motherboard it's on, they can make one to fit PCI into PCI-E slots, especially since there's more demand for that than for the weird CPU adapters I used.
