I don't think Apple ever claimed the software fix would stop the bar loss (attenuation). The reason for the bar fix is to fix how the bars are displayed according to the signal strength. So when it drops to no bars (currently) there should technically still be 1 bar if the signal is above -121 dBm. It doesn't explain why height of the first 3 bars changed, but they never said this would stop the attenuation or signal corruption from happening.

And the quote isn't "holding it wrong". The email from Jobs said "Just don't hold it that way." Granted Steve holds the phone the exact way that causes the issue, but this email didn't show how the user was holding it. Just a written explanation.

When texting, I rotate the phone on it's side so I can make use of the keyboard. When calling, I hold it with my fingertips. I'd never get this reception problem.

What about when you're using your right hand to finger tap the phone in an app? As I showed in this post, its just how you hold it when using an app.

I use my thumb.

It's an enigma
----------------------------------------------------
As bad as this "Antennagate" debacle has gotten, at least Apple did the relatively smart thing by offering everyone a free case in an attempt to mitigate damage. Course if you don't like cases, you've always got these as an option http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/20/antenna-aid-bandages-your-iphone-4-reception-issue-hopes-for-ro/

Regardless, even if they did come out and admit that it's a blatant hardware problem and that they screwed up, how exactly would they go about replacing 3 million iPhone 4's other than a mass recall?
