I work in fast food. Actually wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the shear stupidity you have to deal with every freakin' day. I work in the back, so at least I'm spared from most of the customer stupidity, but I tell you, having to work with total idiots is no fun. Well, actually no. I do have fun messing with them, but still irritating as hell! High turn over is good because usually, the people I have a problem with are out the door in a week anyway, but right now I really can't stand anyone I work with.

I have to share a few things from today. First of all, there's this guy who has been there for about a week, has a major attitude, and keeps showing up an hour and a half late for work. He doesn't seem to be able to count any higher than two seeing as how whenever we have more than two sandwiches to make, he conveniently forgets to make them. And whenever I try to train him at all he acts uninterested and never pays any attention to anything.

Well he was supposed to be training another new guy on dishes today when he barely knows how to do them himself. That was fun enough to listen to, but what made my day was when I took back a pan full of hot bacon grease that had just come out of the oven. Now, the thing has steam rising from it, I'm carrying it back with oven mits on, not to mention you can hear the water steam when I set the thing in the sink. Dead give away that the thing is hot right? well a few minutes later, what do I hear? OW! OMG! *sound of hot pan crashing to the floor. I walked by there and he says to me "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THAT DAMN SHIT WAS HOT?!" I told that I guess he should start paying more attention to things at work then.

That's not the best thing about today though, this isn't really anything to bitch about, it's just damn funny. A co-worker went to clean the bathrooms when she discovered that all the pipes in the men's restroom had been stolen! It had to have happened while we were busy too seeing as how they were fine this morning. That was the funniest thing ever!

I mostly do evenings, and these are beginning to get dead (new seasons for shows on TV, getting cold, etc), so it's boring at times.

(note that I'm a bagger, and I'm asked to do quite a lot of annoying stuff sometimes)

I haven't worked all week. Sure, it's nice, except I'm broke. Also, it's been almost a year and not one raise. Not to mention the job is boring as fuck. Thank God for my DS. Basically the only reason I haven't been looking much into other jobs (and I have looked every now and then) is that I do enjoy the parts where I'm left all alone for 4 hours in the night shift with nearly no customers. (Moonshell video player go! Or I could, in theory, use it to do homework... )

I don't work currently... over the summer I interned at the State House for my state representative... which was like work, but without getting paid (but it will supposedly help me get into college)

Oh no, he wasn't busy. He was back there goofing off just like he had been doing all day. Plus, he looked directly at me as I brought it back, and I even asked him to move out of the way so he wouldn't get burned as I walked past. The guy's just an idiot.

I know the feeling. Thank god I can say that in the past tense now. Used to work RadioShack on top of a convenience store/gas station/food joint. I had an all-points-spectrum of how our town was in terms of being consumers...

And sure, high turnover's great (gas station on example; RS was cool) except for two things. 1) If you're competent enough, like I was, you'll end up being pointed out to train these good-for-nothing idiots how to run a cash register only to fuck up something and then go 'well shit, why do I even bother?' and 2) if you deal with a manager (for the convenience store) like I did who couldn't hire worth a damn and usually got the dumbass 16- or 17-year-olds that didn't know left from right, you'll likely deal with the fact that they won't remove them for weeks at a time out of desperation that this will actually work out. Sometimes it took months. That was just part of life I had to bear on top of 14-hour days, sometimes back-to-back, and most of them 7-days-a-week.

I can honestly say working 7-4:30, M-F, is a welcome change, even if it deals with monotonous electrical and mechanical work with computers. At least it's something I enjoy, I don't deal with customers, and the worst stress I have to deal with aside from my own idiocy for not knowing things I'm learning in terms of electrical things and building things up is 'your mom' jokes. Sure you have to get up at 5:30 or so to get there on time but it beats a bunch of bullshit otherwise. If I ever do management, like I almost did with the gas station and wisely chickened out, I wouldn't hire anyone...ANYONE...under the age of 21. That goes for any job. Honestly, if I could get away with it, I wouldn't hire anyone under the age of 30. People anymore just do not have the common sense to do a damn good job anymore. I'm not saying that people here are incompetent until they reach a certain age, this forum among others on the net have proven their intellect, but when you go out to the real world you find out VERY quickly that 90% of people that apply for the low-end jobs are just there because they have no clue, no will, or just no brain at all.

I'm afraid this boils down to 'do you have decent transportation?'.

If you can answer yes to that, then your excuse is nullified and you really can't complain. This includes biking and, godforbid, walking; I've done it - I had to (X can verify this). I've learned this the hard way: when you need a job and you can get there...you can get a job regardless of the excuses of 'oh I can't find one'.

That's the only reason I have this computer tech job now and that's the only reason I got to self-sufficiency with the duo of crap jobs I had beforehand..

Decent transportation, huh? Now there's something I can rant about...

I live on the bare edge of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus feeder system... My high school happens to be in the city, so to get to school I have to take a bus, and then change to the subway (the school does have a school bus, but it's overcrowded and basically a living hell, and involves a half-hour walk to the bus stop, so I don't take it)

Now, for the past two days (I managed to get a friend to drive me to the subway station on the other days of the week) I've had to take the bus in the morning, I've had the problem that the bus isn't on time... no, it's not late, that'd be fine... No, instead the bus is early! I'm at the end of the bus route, past the layover point, so there's no excuse for drivers waiting (which they do do in the afternoon, when it's inconvenient and wastes my time ) So I have to take the next bus (which is, of course, always on time or late), which, assuming the subway train is entering the station at the exact moment I get to the platform, and I run from the subway station to school, I may make it on time to class...

Supposedly, the MBTA plans on introducing a commuter rail line through my home town... it's been constantly delayed (originally planned opening in 1999), and I don't even know if the schedules will be convenient for me... I'm starting to believe whether they're deliberately lowering the quality of the bus service to entice people to the train (which will cost around 3x as much)

So, I just came back from work:

PRO:
- Relatively easy
- 10-15 minutes away when I'm using my bike (hint: I'm always using it)

CON
- Customers assume that because I work there (grocery store), I know the price of every product, and know where a certain product is in the back (hint: not my job to know)
- I have to take empty beer bottles to the back (hint: whoever does it before me does a fucking crappy job, and there's no way I'll fix his mistakes completely)
- People fucking suck (well not everyone, there's some really funny customers, actually)
- Did I mention people suck?

Now, time for me to share my experience when I worked at Red Lobster. OH BOY!

When I started all was fine and dandy. Then I met one of the managers. Oh god she was a bitch that thought she could do nothing and get everything. She complained about me doing EVERYTHING because she did not like me nor my family (at the time, my mom, brother, aunt, and cousin worked there), mostly due to my mom having past experience with the general manager at that specific Red Lobster years and years back (as in, my dad used to cook alongside him at another Red Lobster 15-20 years ago) and the manager apparently thought the only reason we got the job was due to having ties with the GM.

Let's put it this way. I went a year, switching between busboy and host with only 2 raises that occured in the middle of my full year working there. People coming off the street were getting paid as much as I was. Add to the fact that said manager that hated me hired another busboy that did what I did (which was take a tub, empty the table contents into tub and then empty the tub in the back) but I got yelled at because we were supposed to be using trays (which I can't hold jack shit due to my body structure).

I quit after one day being assigned two AP essays in one night and that manager refused to let me get off because she needed me rolling silverware... for one measley hour. My ride home (my mom) was 30 minutes away (with no traffic), therefore by the time I got home, it was 8 o'clock and I had to eat dinner, take a shower, and then work on my assignments. It was just too stressful for me, especially when people got hired and I had to take their place as best I could (good thing I'm 18 now as child labor laws here are stupid and prohibit those under 18 to work for 4 hours without a 30 minute break).

I actually enjoy my job right now, shockingly. At the moment I work on a different system than most of the other call agents where we manually call people to check on fraud charges instead of getting swamped. It's actually great because we work at our own pace (and have perfectly fair quotas to meet) and don't necessarily HAVE to call the person if all the charges look fine. Saves a lot of pointless calls where people are bitching and complaining about the credit card being blocked because we thought a $50 charge at Wal-Mart (where they ALWAYS shop) was fraud.

Biggest complaint... ooh... probably people who don't know what they're doing. I understand when the new hires are confused but if you've been working for three or four months and still can't bother to read account notes or correctly verify the card holder...

Hah! That's my exact reason for getting a job! I've applied to a few places myself:

Woolworths - Some toy and electrical goods store... That also sells clothes and snacks.
Argos - Similar to Woolies, but huge choice of stuff and it's all done by selecting stuff by a magazine and handing a sheet of paper to the cashier with the code of the item on, then you wait for someone at the back to fetch it.
Game - Hopefully self explanitory...
