You can never actually 100% beat SMB2 so that in its own right makes it the hardest game
I did struggle with Kid Icarus when I first played it especialy trying to play it without dieing once.

I'm gonna have to disagree with those two. The only hard part about Zelda II is the bosses in the Great Palace. You can't really cheese the Thunder Bird, but Shadow Link is beatable by sitting in the corner and taking his legs out.

Mega Man (if you mean the original) was pretty tough at parts, yeah. Once you get some practice in though, the only problem parts are the Yellow Devil and... hmm... I'd say the part that requires the magnet wire or whatever in Wily's Castle 1 isn't fun if you run out of power...

For me though? Battletoads. It's the only NES game I have that I haven't beaten after 16 or 17 years. Even with an infinite lives cheat. I just can not figure that damn swirly vortex ball out.

I found Adventure Island to be hard, and Castlevania. One thing about Castlevania is the screwy physics, and another is how easy it is to lose your special weapon accidentally ARGH WHAT HAPPENED TO MY HOLY WATER I JUST HAVE THIS KNIFE

Castelvania 2: Simons Quest is not only ludicrously difficult because of the not knowing what to do next, but also the game is riddled with bad translations; and is second none to "all your base are belong to us". What the fuck is a Graveyard Duck, and what does it have to do with anything in Simon's Quest?
I found this page to further prove my claims:

I've actually been told that the clues in the Japanese CV2 are just as bizarre.

Contra? Psssssh. Beat that game in one continue on a real NES last year in a speedrun competition. Maybe the pressure just enhanced my reflexes, I dunno.

I always considered Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy to be unfairly difficult, given the size of the game world, the amount of backtracking and item juggling you have to do, the limited number of extra lives and health refills, and the lack of continues or passwords. This seems to be the norm for European developers, though.

And if you want to see the best ending in Gimmick!, you're going to have to master the art of balancing on your own bouncing projectiles over bottomless pits to get all the hidden treasures, as well as make it to the secret final level without continuing. Good luck!

10. SMB2 (J)

Fair enough. (Although you *CAN* beat the game, you just have to do so 8 times on the FDS version to access Worlds A-D.)

9. LoZ2: adventures of link

Never unfairly difficult. Definitely challenging at parts but not top 10.

8. MEGAMAN!!!

The original? Probably the most challenging of the six but after playing through it a few times you'll be much better off.

7. Earthbound

Eh... no...

6. Ninja Gaiden

Fair enough but I might go with Ninja Gaiden II over it... toss-up.

5. Contra

Definitely challenging, but again it's one of those games that you get better at over time.

4. Dragon's Lair

"Hardest" and "unplayable" are two different things.

3. Ghosts n' Goblins

Oh dear.

2. Silver Surfur

Hard, yes... but not a very good game either.

1. Battleshits! (i mean uhh, toads!)(yall didnt see that one comin')

Zelda II is quite hard to get 0 deaths in, at least for me. I can do it in Zelda 1 and LTTP easily-ish, but in Zelda II, it's taken over a decade just to beat it with no game overs, much less no actual deaths.

I blame the lack of recovery hearts dropped by enemies.

I remember playing the first Zelda when i was like six or something and I hated it. Not sure if it was because it was too hard for me or because I just didn't like it.

Never did went back to it.

God... since the NES was such a great success Nintendo decided to make NES videogames based on the STUPIDEST things...

systemguitar says: Agreed
9. LoZ2: adventures of link

Never unfairly difficult. Definitely challenging at parts but not top 10.
*sytemguitar says: I coudnt even find the lantern, but I didnt really invest much time in this one

8. MEGAMAN!!!

The original? Probably the most challenging of the six but after playing through it a few times you'll be much better off.
*systemguitar says: agreed, yeah the original
7. Earthbound

Eh... no...
*systemguitar says: have you played the original for the NES? You may not think its hard, but I do
*terrible Japanese translations
*You cant wonder 10 yard without being attacked (battling is somewhat similar to pokemon)
*acumulation of damage very quickly kills you, forcing you to your last save (you can only save when you find a telephone, telephones are very scarce in Onnet)
*your PSI power drains very quickly

6. Ninja Gaiden

Fair enough but I might go with Ninja Gaiden II over it... toss-up.

5. Contra

Definitely challenging, but again it's one of those games that you get better at over time.

4. Dragon's Lair

"Hardest" and "unplayable" are two different things.
*systemguitar says: Hell yeah its unplayable! your movements are like that of a 90 year old drunk with Dimensia!

3. Ghosts n' Goblins

Oh dear.

2. Silver Surfur

Hard, yes... but not a very good game either.
