Just saw this today while checking the weather from IE6 at work:

Anyone else seeing sites stating they will no longer support IE6? This is the first I've seen.

Yay, IE6 is doomed. The web just got that much less broken.

YouTube is another one of those sites that no longer supports IE 6 or Firefox 2... good riddance to IE 6, but some people still use Firefox 2 since they don't like Firefox 3+... =/

Fixed.

It's nice to see websites slowly dropping support for IE6... but somehow, I have the feeling that won't stop companies or schools at all to continue using IE6.

I just got done fixing an office comp that had IE6/McAfee on it. Changed it out with IE8 and Avast! instead.

You wouldn't believe the amount of difference it had on that poor system. The amount of dumb integrations IE6 had on an OS was ridiculous.

The sooner the world gets off IE6 (and for a small percent, IE5 ) the better. Even IE7 is an improvement.

Makes you wonder how many of them even know that images outside of .gif can support transparency.

They probably think Flash and Java are images, too (since they're now ever so popular for flashing annoying ads).

The sad thing is how many of the IE6 users are horribly resistant against anything that's not IE, because "IE ships with Windows, why would I use anything else?". I eventually gave up on that one.

Hence why the sooner their browsers are rendered worthless by changing web standards, the better.

"Well, guess it don't work no more! Better switch to IE 7!"

On that matter. I can imagine IE6 getting quickly obsolete in Arab countries and Russia, since these increasingly use internationalized domain names which are not supported by IE6.

It will take somewhat longer for the Western countries though.

Or maybe more like "What's wrong with my computer lately, many sites are broken!"

And updating from 6 to 7 won't do much good, it still sucks (8 is a little better, 9 won't run on XP) Even Mozilla 1.2.1 from 2002 does much better in Acid3 (barely worse than Firefox 2), but it's starting to fail on newer sites as well ...

As for dropping support for Internet Explorer 6, YouTube already did a few months ago (but still mostly works), and Google shows the old layout ... I'm sure many more will follow within a few years once Windows XP becomes a minority (it's still at 50% for now, and Internet Explorer 6 near 20%), for obvious reasons

IE7 is still a considerable improvement from IE6. Of course, since they don't make download links for IE7 very obvious, chances are that anyone who still uses IE6 won't have smarts enough to seek it out instead of mindlessly clicking "get newest version".

We have TV commercials for IE8. That's the first time I've seen *any* TV commercial from Microsoft, actually.

For a browser, I've seen plenty of Windows commercials. 7, Vista, and Server.

I only use it for my work applications, but even then they work in IE8. They just don't want everyone to upgrade.

Yeah I've seen plenty of commercials for Windows 7 and Mojave. I even recall a either 95 or 98 commercial as a commercial before a movie on a VHS tape when I was little.

As for websites not supporting IE6... I don't think many have exactly declared dropping support as much as just silently added features that breaks the functionality in IE6. Nice to see that we're moving on to better things.

Heh, this has been (and probably will be) a discussion point forever.

I supported IE6 for a very long time, but just recently started using PNG images and such (and no, no PNG 'hack' either), instead of a bazillion GIF images for a templated website with different background colors. As long as the website/application is usable/functioning properly with IE6, I'm fine with it. People that persist on using that antique browser, will have to cope with gray backgrounds behind my images and charts.

I generally don't support IE6 any more. It's just too much of a hassle to test an ancient browser with <=20% of the share now, and not to mention keeping things functional in it usually means doing things the long, stupid way (no display:none? Enjoy your mindless Javascript)

And that's really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to "List of things IE6 doesn't support"

I if anything laugh with devilish glee when one of my sites causes IE6 to choke, these days.

Oh yeah, its after July 1st. Let me go check out weather.com in IE6.

Besides being a new design, only thing IE6 isn't handling are the alpha transparent .png files. Screws up some of the coloring (light text on generic grey where there should be darker colors), but most of the site is still usable in IE6.

I remember using IE and opening pages in new windows, before I ever used tabs.

It used to be that Internet radio Web sites usually needed IE. For years, I kept it kickin' around just for that.
