In case you missed it today, Apple held a press conference regarding the iPhone 4 reception issues. My general summary of what went on today is:

There is no antenna problem.
There are antenna problems with all smartphones.
We think there might be a problem and we're working on it.
Here's a free bumper or just return your phone.
We love your money... I mean we love our customers.

You can watch the shenanigans here.

I think its a cop out and they're trying to dodge the bullet. Granted I still want an iPhone 4 but I won't be getting their ugly free bumper. There are some better cases out there, may cost more but less bulk added to the phone. I just want something that covers up the trouble spot on the antenna, not a case to protect it from a 30' drop.

I'm glad my Samsung Rugby doesn't have these problems.

but seriously, antenna problems or not, iPhone 4 is still going to sell like hotcakes, just simply because it has a lowercase i in front of it.

Well, it seems they're doing it partially right, in offering a free cover for the antenna. Would be nice if they actually fix the problem (and not just the silly software "fix" that just exaggerates signal strength readings), but it's not like you can expect THAT much from them.

I was at the Apple store over the weekend and got to try it out myself. I didn't do any data speed tests, but I put my hand on the hot spot and saw the bars drop. It happened with all 4 that I picked up, so not unique to particular phones. Still an awesome phone, the screen is amazing and the speed is great. But the whole having to use a case thing sucks.

I liked how they actually made the bars bigger.

Classic Apple 101.

Exactly. It was an error in all previous iPhones but they are just now fixing it? Convenient.

I guess they want you to think you have enough signal strength at 1 bar even though you're next to no signal...

Quite simple. Now that Apple has gotten big, it begins to exhibit Microsoft-like tendencies, like ignoring massive problems and just giving out insufficient solutions for them, while blaming consumers where possible.

This isn't ignoring a problem or giving out weak solutions, that's not Apple's style. This is outright deceiving the users to make them think their product is better than it really is. They do it all the time.

If there is anything Apple is guilty of, it's overconfidence. No one is deliberately trying to deceive anyone here -- anyone can make an honest mistake.

It's retarded how everyone jumps to a conclusion: "THEY'RE TRYING TO RIP ME OFF!!!" Seriously, everyone -- stop being such a pessimist and assuming the worst about every company that exists. Some of these companies are genuinely trying to produce a good product. (The ones that *aren't* trying slowly die off instead of showing profit.) You try managing a company employing thousands of people sometime (or just the IT infrastructure of a single location) -- there are problems all the time and there's no way to solve 100% of them, especially when you've got deadlines to meet.

So what if the iPhone 4 has antenna problems? The world doesn't appear to have ended. Buy a phone from someone else, then. IT'S A PHONE.

Oh, and "Apple's style" is actually pretty much to build the best things they can ... that also look good. They have a reputation to keep up and so they charge more. Having owned several Apple products, and having had an excellent experience with all of them compared to the competition, I can say that the premium is absolutely worth it. No reality distortion field influence here.

You say releasing a patch that exaggerates the signal strength bars as a "fix" is not deceptive? What is it, then?

The patch is supposed to fix the signal exaggeration.

Here's a better chart of the signal rescaling

The problem in the code had been around since forever. It wasn't noticed until this whole ridiculous "Antennagate" fiasco.

Coding problems aren't put there on purpose. If someone messed up the code, then fix it or fire them or do whatever it takes to solve the problem. It's far more likely that it was a simple slip-up that didn't have any negative consequences until the iPhone 4 came along.

It's not like they PLANNED to have a flaw in the software. How does that benefit Apple at all?

Apple's already got a ton of publicity; they don't need any more. When you're a huge brand name, every mistake you make is magnified and every strength is belittled (for another recent example, see Toyota) -- and that's all this is. There's no conspiracy here.

The software fix is one thing:

Basically the bars have been normalized now. Why they made them taller doesn't really make sense. I think Peardian is more eluding to the rumors that Jobs was warned about antenna issues and supposedly did nothing to change since they were late in production.

I think most companies are out to make money first and a close second is to make their customers happy. Sometimes they make bad decisions for the prior reason.

Making the bars taller is indeed deceptive. Starting your browser's progress bars at 10% full is also deceptive.

Apple is primarily concerned with their image. They've amassed their popularity and profits almost entirely because of how they market themselves as a "different" and "hip" lifestyle brand. Obviously, they can't let a serious problem like this go for very long without some kind of "fix", even if it's cosmetic until they can come up with a better solution.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but this wouldn't be a problem for me.

When texting, I rotate the phone on it's side so I can make use of the keyboard. When calling, I hold it with my fingertips. I'd never get this reception problem.

In the Q&A session following the press conference last week, the rumors of the engineer warning Jobs of the antenna problems, well.

Q: Were you warned about this issue?
A: Steve Jobs: I assume you're talking about the Bloomberg article. It's a crock. I've challenged them to prove it. I've talked to Ruben [the antenna engineer who supposedly warned Jobs during the design process] and he agrees it's bullshit.

What about when you're using your right hand to finger tap the phone in an app? As I showed in this post, its just how you hold it when using an app.

Who would admit to this? I always take these things with a grain of salt. We'll never know, but I don't 100% discredit it.

Having a hardware problem, claiming it will be fixed by a software update, and that update doing nothing but changing how the bars work does not, in fact, at any point, make for anything but another deceptive failure by el Apple, Inc.

it is the equivalent of a driver update for a broken graphics card making it put out a fake desktop with "EVERYTHING IS OK. NOTHING IS WRONG." on top of it.

Yeah, yeah ... I know you guys in general don't like Apple (or large corporations in general.) I'm done basically since there's really no winning against that kind of thing. I'm not trying to get you to like them, I'm just ... I dunno.

I guess the reason this set me off is that I've spent my entire morning under attack by users ticked off that I had to kick them offline/off the network while reconfiguring a bunch of ethernet hubs and I have heard quite enough bitching and things being blown out of proportion for one day.

My main point is that I am just sick of people assuming CONSPIRACY when there's been a mistake made and a not-entirely-adequate-for-everyone solution/coverup given. Sometimes things really are as simple as they look at face value.

As for the Q&A session, transcripts have been posted all over the internet since well ... it was an Apple press conference.

Call it what you want, but it's still a fact. Apple released a software update, said it was going to "fix the issue", and all it did was tweak the bar appearance.

Irrational Apple hate? No. They lied about it, tried to cover it up, insulted their users ("holding it wrong", etc) and then shit on everybody with more bullshit.

It's not an anti-Apple thing. They just fucked up.
