So, this is an idea I've had lingering in the back of my head for months now.

I've always wanted to try to go for a ROM hack where, instead of using Mega Man, you play as one of the Robot Masters instead. The closest I've seen to this is an Elec Man hack for Mega Man 5, but I'm thinking a little bit bigger. Essentially, I'd like to make it so you play as that Robot Master with all the frills and benefits that the computer-controlled boss would have; full use of their weapon, proper sound effects, speed/jumping ability, the whole nine yards.

However, I can't really contribute a whole heck of a lot to it. I can do some graphics replacement, maybe a little palette hacking using Visine or something, and perhaps permanently add in an Infinite Weapon Energy code or something so that the default is always that robot master's ability (unless the robot master is one from a different game, and in that case...yeah) or find codes to alter the speed and jump height and have it permanently put in.

I just wondered if anyone would be down in joining me in this little escapade. I figure it might help bring my programming knowledge up to snuff a little, as well as just having a group to do stuff with. Plus, coming up with a team name is awesome.

You know, I think you would have more luck with this if you ask on board 2, as, they have quite a bit of megaman hacking/hackers recently.

I'm not sure if a board specifically on hacking outside of here would be welcome with someone posting this who is unable to pull much of their weight. As I've noticed, if you can't do it yourself, don't bother asking other people. So therefore, since I can't do much, I don't think they'd appreciate it if some new guy came in saying he can't do too much and wants others to help him with the bulk of the work.

Then again, I'm notorious for being horribly nervous and forum shy, so...

Either way, if you share the idea there it's more likely that someone sees it and thinks it's a good idea. That alone makes the chance bigger that an hack like that will come out. So either way I think it's worth your time!

If I were going to do this, I'd be tempted to hack together a homebrew SNES platforming engine, so it'd then be easier to code any characters I wanted - say, all the bosses from all the games. But I'm crazy.

Wouldn't it be easier, supposing you use a robot that's already in the game, to spawn that robot and program it to respond to keypad input/stay on top of Megaman's location, then simply make Megaman invisible/have that robot master's ability? You'd need to copy Megaman's hitstun to the robot master's and make the robot master unable to harm Megaman, though...

Of course, this assumes that the engine isn't limited like in lots of older games where certain levels don't properly handle certain objects (e.g. trying to spawn a boss weapon outside of a boss battle in Mischief Makers often spawns some useless robot parts).

Still, that'd probably be the easiest way to do it, but it'd require the sort of knowledge you don't claim to have...

The game unloads enemy graphics when it loads a boss, so that idea would not work.

As for your idea Rick, I thought the Megaman 1 remake, Megaman Powered Up did this? (There were conditions for unlocking them if I remember correctly.)

Actually yes. Mega Man: Powered Up was an inspiration for this hack. I own it and love it. =)

As for spawning the robot master and all that stuff, I have no idea how easy that would be.
