I figured I'd post it here too, just to give this a little more exposure.

The hack name is Obscure Kingdom and is a darker, grittier take on SMB3. It's somewhat loosely based on my fanfic of the same name, also aiming to make the Mario universe a darker, more horrific reality; as if the story was being told as it would occur in real life.

Though, with the NES, always having a dark and gritty setting would limit me artistically, because of the limitations of the system, so you will see some brighter areas here and there.

Technically, the hack itself will be a regular SMB3 hack; there will not be any ASM hacks that change how the game plays from the original. However, there will be many technical ASM hacks to enable limitations to be lifted with the ROM itself. One, is to allow it to be expanded and used wit Reuben. The second is to be able to add songs into the game, along side the originals.

I do not take any credit for the technical ASM modifications as they will be applied as patches made by DahrkDaiz and JaSp to use their editors and utilities.

So, let's get on with some screenshots and videos!

<object width="340" height="285"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VxC5hhqR92I&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="340" height="285"></embed></object>
This is the title screen of my hack, which will likely change before its final release. Small amount of ASM was used to move he position of the selection arrow.

<object width="340" height="285"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JquI7Ppbxyk&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="340" height="285"></embed></object>
This video shows one of the first levels I have made before the advent of Reuben. You will see this level in a more glorious Reuben form in the hack!

<object width="340" height="285"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Maw0OejaYUA&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="340" height="285"></embed></object>
This video, again, shows the title screen, but it also shows most of World 1. All of the levels in this video will be in the hack, but they will be re-made to better take advantage of the new level format used by Reuben. I may reuse the map screen.

The video also showcases minor edits to music sequence data and instruments. This was the beginnings of the music hacking JaSp has allowed me to perform.

<object width="340" height="285"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gJGv_KouGdg&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x2b405b&color2=0x6b8ab6&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="340" height="285"></embed></object>
This is when I first started messing with Reuben and making test levels. I wanted to see what could be done. Needless to say, this video shows the potential of what can be done but at the same time barely scratches the surface. I may or may not bring some of these levels back.

<object width="340" height="285"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5eyvlM4f8Ro&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="340" height="285"></embed></object>
This video showcases the differences between the Original SMB3 level format and DD's new Reuben format. Also has a new music track (Zelda 2 Caves/Action) I imported using JaSp's music inserter.

<object width="340" height="285"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2dHtNIj2cS4&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="340" height="285"></embed></object>
This video shows the hack in its most complete form, as of the day after Christmas, 2009. It has several new levels and new music tracks. And, a nifty Super Mario Land 1-1 remake.

Here's a screenshot of Septic Sanctuary. This also got an overhaul.

<object width="500" height="405"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ti8UNXiBsC0&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="500" height="405"></embed></object>
I know the pipe in the beginning is changed, but vertical pointer pipes don't work right now so I'm stuck with horizontal ones. Weird bug, but whatever.

Anyway, I plan on making an entire world of original level remakes, so if anyone wants to suggest a level they'd like to see in this hack to appear in this world, drop them here!

<object width="500" height="405"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/O-x4yUM-Qow&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x402061&color2=0x9461ca&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="500" height="405"></embed></object>

I have added an ASM hack that is going to be the basis of the gameplay originality for this hack. Here's the video!

<object width="660" height="525"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3PKviYiyNMw&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="660" height="525"></embed></object>

Let me explain what is going on in this video. First, this level is just a sort of "training ground" for Mario, to show off the ASM hack and to complete certain obstacles normally impossible to overcome. This particular area combines flight and star power. When you get a "coin" (which will actually be called Power Chips) you get a little tiny bit of power. An accumulation of coins makes this effect last longer!

World 1 will be a normal world, with normal coins. As you progress, you will find that coins, "Power Chips", will begin to have strange effects in Mario and will need to take advantage of it in some places to continue on in any given level.

Levels will stay fresh and beautiful throughout. Each level will be new and strange, but fun and mysterious at the same time. I will not abuse this and make it so gimmicky that you just cannot complete levels and ragequit.

Interesting. Looks like some sweet work, but each time you jumped grabbed a coin hit an enemy or basically did anything I wanted to punch you because it ruined every single song. And you did a whole lot of all of those >8(

I do know of that issue, and it's something I've been working on. I just needed to look at logical architecture for a song and just re-assign one of the channels. Sound effects use one of the square wave channels, and my songs use both of them in that video. To make it less disruptive, assigning the bass/low octave track to be one of the square wave channels and using the triangle as one of my main/lead channels should fix this, at least to some degree, because I do agree that it sounds like utter shit as it stands right now.

I'm not as familiar with SMB3 hacking (the only one I've played is Mario Adventure) but I can already tell this will be a nice hack from the vids I saw. The ASM trick also seems like it could be a good idea. Also, Since I hadn't heard of Reuben until now, I found the comparison vids helpful.

Good luck with this hack then!

Here's another pic of a Hilly tileset I made not too long ago. This is one of many I've yet to complete.

I plan on having multiple graphics tilesets for each level type. I already have two for the fortress and I plan on a second for the Hilly tileset.

Yeah, it looks nice, but the coin sound is just... urgh. Especially since you seem to plan on using it as a major thing (and thus have a lot of coin collecting), I might suggest you make the coin collection noise limited to even nonexistent.

Yeah, that's an idea... changing the coin collecting sound...

I'm going to restructure the channels that each track uses so sound effects aren't so devastating but editing the coin sound effect itself is a great idea.

I know it seems you're enjoying your palettes, but I really think it would be beneficial if you kept Breakable/? Block/Carry Block bricks the same(ish) colours across levels...It was getting to the point in the videos where I wasn't sure what blocks were what until you interacted with them.

Still, as much as I am apathetic about SMB3 I can see a lot of work going in here.

I've dropped down a bit in activity for this hack, but I'm still motivated to work on it. I'm still lacking in Airship levels, but I might be able to get away with a really hacky workaround and deviation from how worlds and airship levels work.

Some of the palette issues mentioned aren't going to be as big of a problem as they've been shown to be. I'm going to make throwable bricks have their own graphic since I'm thinking that's really the only thing I can see people confusing other blocks with.

Also, I wonder if I should start trying my hand at water levels now? What do you guys think?

I personally hate water levels, so in my NSMB hacks there are absolutely no water levels... Though if you do like them, go ahead
Airship levels are way cooler, and I think you could get a lot of originality out of it with Reuben... A more complete tileset, maybe similar to nsmbwii's would be cooler... And custom boss battle arenas!

Just one question... Where have you got reuben from? I have downloaded and compiled it from here but i can't get it to work... Does it require a special ROM or does it patch a standard one to extend it?

Thanks ...

This looks really good and if you do finish it I will play it, unlike Mario Adventure which I still have yet to even touch.

I got Reuben straight from DahrkDaiz as I am his beta tester. One of them, at least...

Reuben *does* need a specific ROM to work. The final version will patch regular ROMs which will then become unusable in other editors and will work only in Reuben. This is because the ROM will be expanded to allow for the extra space that Reuben needs.

Also, requesting that link to be killed. If DD wanted to release it, he would have. Some dickhead leaked it, I guess.

Thanks Sails. There's a lot of work to be done on this hack and will reach full development once DD does more work on Reuben. I kind of want to release a demo, but since the ROM hasn't been released, releasing a demo also means releasing the ROM. Can't do that...

Ok... I understand...

But there IS an expanded ROM in the Reuben SVN Repository that probably works with Reuben. (how didn't i see it before??) That's public for anyone, so i dont see why you shouldnt release a demo

He's released several of them. I don't know which one(s) is(are) up there so out of respect to DD I'd rather not post it. Besides, who posts demos to flagship hacks?

EDIT: Well... I'll try to fix up the source code on the svn to see if i can get it working with that rom

I still haven't heard much on Reuben in a while. It's mostly the reason progress on this hack has been lacking. I'm really motivated to at least track him down to see what's up.

As far as this hack itself goes, I'm kind of lacking in the ideas department... Any of you have any ideas or suggestions on what you'd like to see level design-wise? I'm kinda relying on help from you guys here in this thread, so anything would be great! What kinds of levels would you guys like to see? A special graphics set?

Let me know, thanks!

Ok, I heard from DD recently, and here's what's up regarding Reuben:

<DahrkDaiz> I just got the source again the other day and started to muck around in it a bit

<DahrkDaiz> it's still hard to find time to work on it
<DahrkDaiz> but I'm getting there

Also, still need some input as I'm an idea-less schmuck and need help.

Yes. Level design ideas are needed the most.
