So, my old monitor decided to pass away a few days ago, after 10 years of working.

This of course meant that I had to look for a new monitor. Following the new development, I went with a super new widescreen monitor and am now running on 1920x1080 pixels.

It's great, but I still need to get used to this size. Also, it will almost certainly cause problems with games... well I'll see how it works.

I'd also have loved to use DVI, but for some odd reason, my graphics card does not like it... I have no idea why.

Welcome to real world!

I switched to widescreen years ago. About 2006 I believe, got a 19" widescreen with a resolution of 1440x900. Now I'm up to a 22" but it only has a resolution of 1680x1050. Its enough for me, but not true HD. My laptop is obviously widescreen (as they all are these days) but its stuck with 1366x768

My first widescreen computer was my old laptop, which I got in January of 2008

This laptop is also a widescreen laptop. The keyboard is wide enough for a full keypad, which is good for some level editors that assume that all computers are desktops with full keyboards for some reason

Paulguy's Post configuration
I was on a 4:3 (up to about 1280x960) CRT until about 2005ish, then got a 5:4 (1280x1024) LCD that was replaced in 2007 with a 16:10 (1680x1050) LCD monitor, but it was a real piece of crap, so it was replaced a year later with a 16:9 (1920x1080) LCD monitor.

So, I've been on widescreen for about 3 years. I used to hate it and just thought it was another source of overpriced "gamer" hardware, but found it quite useful (at large enough screen sizes/resolutions) for having windows side by side. I honestly wouldn't recommend widescreen for less than 1920x1080 or ~20". I have a hard time fitting stuff properly on my laptop screen which is ~14" and 1366x768. Too vertically short.

Absolutely and yes come to mind. Fairly inexpensive to get started.

This explains why your post layout background repeats horizontally when I view it.

Thats because 1920x1080 is just too much. It doesn't repeat with 1680x1050!

I have a laptop with a 1366×768 screen, and for a few months I used a 22' 1080p TV as a secondary monitor and then my primary monitor. Man, it was awesome.

It's too bad that my TV is now stuck on my high TV stand and unusable because of the desk here. It's like one of those desks that were MADE for 1024×768 screens with the shelves going around the screen and a cubby for the tower. Ugh.

22" 1080p? Thats a bit overkill for a TV. I use my laptop on our 60" TV every once in a while, I have a wireless keyboard and mouse. Fun to play games on.

Paulguy's Post configuration
How is 22" 1080p overkill for a TV? 22" is rather small (Really, normal size for something you'd just watch whatever on.) for a TV and 1080p is pretty standard res, and the only resolution to display 1080p or even 1080i properly and YES it DOES make a difference. :p I honestly can't stand those odd 1366x768 TVs because they can't display either HD resolution without scaling up or scaling down. No option for nice 1:1 pixels for 1080p. What's worse is some sets will actually report their native res as 1920x1080 but they'll actually be lower, and may not even ACCEPT their native resolution.

But that's only for the cheapest crap TVs, like the godawful plasma set I got a couple years ago that was cheap. It had some oddball resolution of like, 1024x540, then used some odd line shuttering technique to get 1024x1080i, but would only accept 640x480, 1280x720 and 1920x1080i. What a piece of crap. I don't know why I bought it, but it was a stupid impulse buy. My sister has it now but she doesn't really mind because she only watches 480i stuff on it. It also looked like everything would always go through some weird enhancing filters that you couldn't turn off, which kinda faked it looking "better" than it really did. It also has really terrible banding problems and some really weird grainy noise dither on top of that, which is fucking horrible. What garbage!

I have really miserable luck with televisions and monitors! Next time I go monitor/TV shopping, I'm bringing my laptop and an HDMI cable to the store with some test patterns on it, so I can see how it handles computer input signals. Most seem to have really bad color issues or have "enhancement" filters that you can't disable, which make everything look miserable for graphics and film/video.

I'm ranting again!

I know people who still have a 4:3 TV. Now that's very sad, because it means that the actual screen size is quite small since all TV stations use 16:9 these days and this will lead to black lines.

For a screen that small, 720p is enough pixel density that you would only notice a difference if you were 1 foot from the screen. 720p is good up to about 27"-30". After that, you can easily notice the pixelation. Obviously for the best of the best, you'd want 1080p on anything. But I still think its overkill for smaller screens. However, since it is becoming the norm and we'll probably see 4K TV's in the next 2 years... the point is moot.

I might be happier with widescreen if they didn't choose such a weird ratio for it. 14:9? The screen resolution numbers used to all be nice and tidy and then you get 1440 x 900 and 1920 x 1080.

1920x1080 on a 23 inch screen here, used exclusively for my G4.

My TV is still a 4:3 CRT. Still serving me just fine... no plans to upgrade until it goes.

I hope that 1680x1050 becomes the new 1024x768.

I don't look at smaller screens the same way anymore and it would be nice if larger resolutions become standard everywhere.
