I can't seem to enable Stereo Mix on my Realtek HD integrated audioboard, either, which is infuriating me to no end.

I've followed a few guides, and no luck. Any way I'll be able to do it with my current audio, or will I have to buy a SB Audigy or something? I'm honestly not up-to-date on sound cards.

Using a microphone for audio isn't exactly a suggestion I'd like, either. I'm kinda picky about quality, and I get the feeling most Sound Blaster cards could support soundfonts anyway. As long as the card is fairly cheap and wouldn't break every bit of money I have left, I'd be fine. I hear $30 or so, which is actually quite feasible... though I'd much rather continue using integrated if I have the choice.

Correct me if I'm wrong on anything here.

Sorry if this is completely useless and you tried it before.
This worked for me:

You know, I have the same issue with any recording software I use, it just can't record the sound. In camstudios case, I have the exactly same issue. I tried to search manually, but it did not really help.

I use Hypercam 3 for my sound and video recording for YouTube. It works perfectly. I had this same problem when I tried CamStudio.

Zero: this is more of an issue of sound drivers/sound card rather then CamStudio itself, if I understand correctly.

Realtek? You might not actually have a stereo out mix option. I don't

Paulguy's Post configuration
I had a computer with the stereo out mix available, but disabled in the control panel. Might want to look around there and see if it's available but just disabled. This was a Macbook Pro with Realtek HD audio, so you might be in a similar boat.

Would be nice if there were virtual sound card drivers that just had a shit-load of sinks and sources, and just let you route and mix as you want. Linux has something kinda like this with JACK, but the software needs to use the JACK API directly, and not through ALSA or OSS, so it's not too useful for this kind of thing. Why has nobody done this for Windows or Linux? I have looked on google in the past and found nothing.

What's worse is stereo mix is usually returned through the analogue to digital converter, resulting in degraded quality. You'd probably get the same with a small patch cable from line out to line in.

I can actually see it in the audio control panels, but there's no block on the slider in Realtek's controls and it's grayed out in Windows's controls.

Really confusing.

This worked for me:

manual search ahh

This just reports that it can't find the recording line.

The thing that pisses me off about this? It DID work at one point in an old Windows install!

paul: Realtek customer support confirmed to me that it didn't have that feature at a hardware level.

Moral of the story: Realtek makes terrible hardware. I figured this out a long time ago. It's dirt-cheap for a reason.

My desktop motherboard uses an Analog Devices SoundMAX chip, which is actually really decent (my main sound card is actually an Audigy 2, but I keep the SoundMAX enabled for programs that choke on Creative's drivers, e.g. Cave Story). My laptop, on the other hand, uses a Realtek HD Audio chip, and in addition to occasional sound dropouts and volume issues when hardware acceleration is enabled, its timing fluctuates like crazy, making audio/video sync fail in most emulators.

Wow, that sucks. Well, I know some have it but just disabled in software, but I guess some just don't have it outright.

As evidenced, I've actually managed to fix the problem somehow. Not sure at all how, but I have.

I might still consider a PCI (not PCI-e, I only have one port and that's taken by my GeForce 9500GT) sound card at some point, however. Any suggestions? I hear Rocketfish cards are literally just rebranded SB Audigy cards, and I don't remember those being too bad. Fairly cheap, as well...

I wouldn't take any chances on an off-brand, lest you end up with something worse than the Realtek. You might technically get an Audigy chip, but who knows what the quality of the other components is like?

I just did a search for Audigy 2 on Google, and they can be found for as cheap as $9 used...

[edit]
There's also a chance the Rocketfish cards are Audigy [2] SEs, which don't even use the EMU10K2 chip, and have no hardware acceleration to speak of. Where'd you hear about the cards, anyway?

My Realtek on-board audio is just fine, but I had to get the correct driver from the Asus site to get stereo mix on mine. Anyway, the stereo mix works great on here, at least from what I've done so far. =/

Yknow, even though these cards have no hardware stereo mix source, why is it so impossible to provide a dump of the driver output just before the card? Is it just some political RIAA shit so people can't make bit-exact copies or something? I'm surprised linux doesn't have this option, either, outside of JACK.

Looks like I was right about the Rocketfish cards...Windows seems to detect them as an Audigy LS. Yuck!

Yeah... I'll get an Audigy 2 if I ever do decide to pick one up.

Not sure if I'd gain a significant amount over my current Realtek audio (since I have everything working, now) though, but if the need ever arises I know what to shoot for now.

Problem I could see with trying to get old sound cards is a lot of motherboards are phasing out regular PCI in favor of PCI express. Rather unfortunate... as "good" sound cards nowadays are just... nonexistent. They're either overpriced gamer garbage, WAY overpriced audiophile garbage or complete crap garbage. Some USB audio devices are OK, though.

I don't think PCI is going to totally disappear for a while yet, as there are simply too many popular devices out there that still use the interface. However, a lot of boards have dropped down to one slot, just enough to provide some measure of legacy support (similar to PATA).

There are a few motherboards out there that have no PCI slots, but they tend to be high-end boards (one of them was $400!) intended for rich gamers and other "power users" who know they'll never need a PCI card.
