Because 74% of businesses are still using it. Its understandable. Like they say in the article, the primary reason is because of software used by said companies that may not work on Windows 7. It would cost them more than just buying X amount of licenses from Microsoft. Their software would have to be updated, and I've experienced a few updates here at my work... not an easy task.

Microsoft should develop Windows 8 that runs Windows XP software natively... also not an easy task but if it worked then they would get that much more money from every business that hasn't upgraded.

I've been thinking of a Wine-like system for a long time, that they could use, where all those old insecure, bloaty APIs could be made available for old applications, and allowing them to remove all that crap from the standard windows API. Also, everything within the program would be isolated, and not touch anything on the host system. It'd run in a virtual root with a virtual registry, with a virtual set of services and startup tasks that the program may have set that get "booted up" along with the program. But no hardware would be emulated. It'd have access to the driver interface through the translation layer, just like Wine.

Of course, this would be more work for Microsoft, so they'd rather leave old kludges in to make sure shitty software some IT guy who knows nothing wrote in VB in 1996 works still, whether it means a less secure (and nowadays more complicated) OS or not.

Yeah, virtualizing XP seems to be the best answer. Continuing to have to support Windows XP after a point will become ludicrous, as much as I like to use it myself.

So, basically the "Windows XP Mode" thing Microsoft made available for free on Windows 7, where you run a special copy of WinXP in a virtual machine that integrates with the rest of the UI, so you can do pretty much what you both said?

Then again, isn't a lot of that needed to deal with the poorly made Visual Basic programs from 1996?

It's not perfect, but, my computer can boot up a virtual machine of XP x32 in about 5 seconds, and that probably has even more crud in it; not saying that it's perfect, but if you're virtualizing a bunch of old, dumb programs that weren't programmed properly, odds are you don't worry too much about the crud.

Or you get WINE, since IIRC that's probably a more efficient way of doing it anyway.
