I'm really going to miss Windows 2000... it sure was one of the best operating systems by Microsoft ever... (although I only used it for about 4 months or so before getting a new machine with XP SP2 on it. =/)

In fact, I made an obituary for Windows 2000 (I actually wrote this back in April, but I wasn't sure if EOL was in April or July back then...)

Funny thing is, a local supermarket chain around here (Price Chopper) seems to still use Windows 2000 and even Windows 98SE for its embedded systems. Seems like they're too cheap to switch from these unsupported OSes... sure, they're still good for some things, but for something critical like a supermarket, you'd probably be better off with Linux if you're still going to use aging hardware. =/

Now, to quote the Strong Bad Email "the paper": "Farewell, my beloved operating system... and Windows 2000 goeth into the... night..."

Ironically I just updated my motherboard as you posted this.

XP x64 remains useful to me, regardless of how old it is. Plus it's a kick to see how fast it goes on a 3.2 GHz dual-core CPU.

The amusing thing is I actually picked up Windows 2000 a couple of months ago at a flea market.

I tend to use it as a VM environment, really. I guess I could install it on an older machine of mine that runs 98, but I honestly don't think there'd be very much of a difference.

With a new processor, you can easily emulate old stuff at lightspeed, so even if you used chunky Vista, you could ostensibly just have Windows 2000/98 in a VM for your main OS.

Truthfully, I totally missed that. If that's what Windows ME was, then like...I totally forgot that existed until now.
