In the old days, they'd actually try to save a tiny amount of RAM by putting in, say, 78 instead of 1978. Actually, a lot of those Y2K-related problems were just display errors, like "5 March 102" type stuff or Windows 3.1's 19:0 for 2000. Some old software didn't have calendar support past the year 1999, though.
