I didn't buy it "right off the bat" (I'd been playing it via someone else's account for a bit and still haven't used my own )

Don't get sucked in! It's horrible! Save yourself while you can! It's too late for usssssssss!!! D:

Do give it some thought once multiplayer comes out though, because I get the feeling we're going to have a field day with it. I mean, if it's as addicting as it is with just single player, imagine the possibilities of mutiplayer.

It really needs a way to make a map in-game, though. It's way too easy to get lost if you happen to walk too far.

The common method is to use trails of flowers, or trails of torches. I use giant towers, personally...

Maybe torches... Is there a good way to farm wood other than punching random trees?

Those green leafy things their degrading leaves drop are not bushes.

Exactly, when you punch a tree, as the leaves disappear, they'll drop little branchy looking things you can collect. Those are saplings, and if you plant one in some dirt/grass, it'll grow into a tree within a day or so, granted it has enough light and space to do so.

Every tree you punch down drops at least 4 or 5 of those saplings. Interestingly enough, this makes wood the most renewable resource in all of minecraft.

I never punched that far (I left one segment of trunk in) because the idea of a floating tree makes me amused as all shit.

Pre-order made, here's how I feel about the Alpha

Day1 = Punches trees for wood and saplings, the whole day is wasted like this.
Night1 = Complains about the darkness, then remembers how there are enemies in the game. Paranoia increase
Day2 = Gets more wood then crafts a craftbox. Doesn't do anything with it. Takes fall damage at one point for 1 heart. Paranoia increase.
Night2 = Goes paranoid again, which increases at the possible sight of a dog/wolf. 1 wiki trip later, paranoia decreases but not by enough.
Day3 = Takes fall damage again, this time for 2 hearts. Kills a pig for food, but nothing drops. Finds two more pigs later, only one of them drops Pork. Recov 1.5 hearts.
Night3 = Paranoia grips tightly, uses dirt to build a bunker and stays in it for half the night.

Why am I so goddamn paranoid at this, I know I shouldn't be but that doesn't stop me from pulse-jumping when it's nightfall. If these torches could be placed from further away...

Currently: Trying to find way back to starting position (I know where it is) but believe I am just going further away constantly. Online as well so I can't use that one program for it.

Is it possible to grow these underground? I've managed to get a wheat farm in two of my caves, but the tree I planted doesn't want to grow.

Also, if you hear monsters, but don't want to put the effort to dig randomy in the direction of the sound, just hit f constantly. It's actually a button for render distance switching, but it makes everything but creatures, objects, and more vanish. Don't be suprised to see 25+ monsters in one area though.

And on a further note, I hit a dungeon with a skeleton spawner. Found 2 saddlesand a bunch of mossy cobblestone though.

Yes, but it requires a lot of torches.

I honestly think the game should really, really start you with a torch (or pack of 4) to get you started. Sometimes it can take quite a while to find coal on some maps, and being left completely blind ten minutes into the game is terrible.

I also think shovels should have a 4x durability bonus, but that's just me.

That's simmilar to what I did, but I don't think I have enough in there.

Glad I'm not the only one whoi thinks of these things. The other one that needs fixing would be the hoe, which is annoyingly weaker than most other tools.

Also, I hit 2 more dungeons, one of which was the result of pressing f and careful TNT placement. (One was a spider spawner, the other zombies.) And out of boredom, I found bedrock, dug beneith it to where sky appeared, put all my stuff away, and went diving into literally nothing.

So, I made the "pre-order" the other day, and it really is as addicting as people say.

Most of my time playing this game is spent making my shack look fancy, chopping down forests, planting new ones, and making spiral staircases until I hit bedrock. I haven't found much aside from coal and a bit of redstone, or whatever you want to call it, and the caves I find are generally small and uninteresting. I happened to stumble upon a single square of gold and a little bit of iron, but that's it.

In the future, I see myself making good use of minecarts, but for now, I think I'll continue this process until I get a decent amount of iron to work with.

You can always go exploring in other people's maps (don't get lost!) ... though you can't use any of the goodies in it for yourself.

As for caves, keep looking. Worst case, take a few hundred torches and walk around, dropping a string of them (enough to find your way back, usually every 20 blocks or so). Sometimes you can find a really nice one that way.

Admittedly, an interesting way of "cheating" is to just make a small room for yourself that's sealed up so you can't be damaged, set the game to Hard (or some other difficulty that spawns mobs, but doesn't Hard do it more?) and just wait a while; you can then push F repeatedly to make the world blink out of existence for a while, and all the mobs will show up beneath the ground. Just be sure to turn it back off, haha.

As an aside, I had the bright idea to toy with the idea of making a wiki for the game. "But there already is one!" Yes, and it sucks. Hard. Only problem is, I think I found out why it sucks... nobody can stop playing enough to help

So one of the things I'm doing (against my better judgement) is ... well, let's just say it was inspired from many things, but this is a recent example:

The search for the golden crapple

That is the worst wiki I've ever seen Minepedia wiki, basically hurr durr minecraft run by some idiot who doesn't even know how to sign his name:

The rules allow pages about community members who are noteworthy and/or have a certain leading position. (in my case, I'm the main wiki administrator) ~Quatroking (I forgot the signature code and I'm browsing from my DSi)

As a bonus, the "Rules" link on their main page goes to a "This page has been deleted" notice (yes, seriously) and the actual ruleset isn't much better. Want to have a guide on how to actually accomplish things in the game? Sorry, too obvious. No joke.

You can probably guess where I'm going with this. And if you can't, well, here.

Meet Minecraft Wiki.

This is still in the "planning" stage where we figure out how things work, much like The Cutting Room Floor was back a few months ago (and look how well that one turned out; pretty good, I think.)

The goal is more or less to put our collective knowledge together and make a good reference and guide for the Alpha/future Beta version. The fact there's no simple "Getting started" guide on the current one is abhorrant, and if you're wondering why we don't just fix that one, the admin is a complete moron.
