Similar to protection against burglars, any password does not grant full protection and can be broken at any time. It just needs time. But with a long and secure enough password, you can make it more complicated/time-consuming for intruders at least.

So that neat little program will need more time with a 12+ character word, including special characters, not being in dictionaries though.
One more secure way might be something like an USB stick, which you need to dock on your machine to be able to log in (like, putting some vital user files onto the stick, and similar ...), and combining this with another password.
And although that program might be good for retrieval of forgotten passwords, most users use very unsafe and easy passwords like "password" or "sex" ..

Hm, for some reason it reminds me of my parents attempt to put a password on my computer way back (it was Windows 95), and I was able to get around it by simply pressing "cancel"...

Though it's probably not great that the passwords can be cracked easily, it was only a matter of time I guess...

Old news. Plus I personally prefer using ntpasswd and simply blanking the admin password when I need to get in (yes there are legitimate reasons; some people seem to think the world is perfect and you always get passwords when handed a previously-used machine).

Daily Cycle II ~ 2989
I am neither suprised nor interested, considering this requires access to the machine. Whoopee.

Boring.

If you have physical access to the machine, the data on it, if it isn't yours, is from a security standpoint, screwed. If you can't crack the password, you can hack around it in that case, not to mention read the encrypted data another way if the OS doesn't like you.

So in other words, not so much old news than "Meh."

That's not always the case, though. Suppose the BIOS is configured to boot from hard drive first and has a password, and there's no way to get at the data from within the OS? You'd have to open up the machine to reset the password. That may not be possible if it's not yours and there are people/cameras nearby. If they use remote monitoring you'll probably be raising red flags just by rebooting. Being able to just run a program that will get you the password is a lot more likely than being able to disassemble the system and rearrange jumpers.

Of course if it's your machine, or nobody's around, there's pretty much nothing that can be done. I once bought a computer that had a BIOS password and a lock built into the case, and of course received neither the password nor the key. I ended up having to smash the lock open with a screwdriver and a hammer, but I got in dammit.

A. Move hard drive to new machine, or even into a convenient USB case before accessing.
B. If the case is in the way, you can either cut your way in, drill your way in, or (etc.)
C. If it's on school property and not, say, in your house, then it doesn't really apply, 'cause they got security there.
D. BIOS can be reset by taking out the battery. Ain't that nasty?

BIOSes often have a backdoor password.
