Pretty self explanitory right? Discuss your 3d modeling projects, post screenshots

My previous thread titled: Summer Vacation 2010, had a small discussion about 3d modeling, so I thought those of you who took part in that discussion, or anybody who has interest in 3d modeling could come to this thread to discuss thier projects.

I generally prefer to collect models than to create my own. Chances are that almost any render I post will be of a game model. Those who have been following the Cutting Room Floor know that I'm currently ripping/collecting SMG1/2 models.

That is not to say I haven't ever made my own models.

At the moment, I'm trying to get inspiration for some Super Mario 64 levels. It isn't going well. I also intend on creating levels, weapons and eventually characters for games like Unreal Tournament and Quake III.

Usually, no, but I will rig something if it's simple and inorganic enough (usually robots). Most of the N64 models I get come posed anyway because of the method I use, but I have to rely on animation files for SMG/SMS models to give me presentable poses. I have very little experience in rigging, and only know the basic concept of Reverse IK chains.

Edit: However, I do enjoy refurbishing and enhancing models, especially older ones. Just check my wallpaper topic and that should be obvious.

I've never dabbled that much into 3D modeling... but I'm very good at 2D stuff, like simple pixel art and pixel fonts. I just couldn't grok 3D programs... =/

I learned all about 3D by actually playing with existing models. I taught myself most of the ins-and-outs of working Cinema 4D over the course of a year or so while ripping Paper Mario. That's probably why I can work it well enough to make renders like in my signature, but can't make custom organic models worth beans.

Of course, 3D modeling isn't for everyone. I certainly prefer spriting than trying to create polygons from scratch.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I've messed with blender in the past but never really made anything worthwhile in it. I'm not very creative/artistic/etc.

how would you go about... say, ripping a model from sm64, because that would be very useful for a project im working on

Your best bet would be to ask one of the people working on the SM64 editing tools. The method I use doesn't work well on SM64 because of how it does its VRML stuff. Extracting the model from the game itself with a specialized program is the best way to go.

Sadly I can't find any of my old work, but by the second year we had made some decent stuff that probably could've been UT maps (we were supposed to actually do that, but our teacher never did anything about it) and we ended up making some pretty good models that probably could've been in HL2 or something. We took embarrassingly awesome pictures of ourselves in class for the textures, haha. This was my least favorite part of design though, from the texturing, boning the skeleton... WAY too much patience needed for characters. I just enjoyed making levels and environments. Though making objects (items and weapons mainly) and texturing them was kind of fun too.

I probably could've gotten a head start into game design but I decided I didn't want my #1 hobby to be turned into a chore (at least how I felt personally). That, or I just didn't have the patience for it, but I'd like to brush up on my skills again and maybe do some stuff for fun here and there someday.

Our school was total bullshit about the program though. Audio/Video Production and Aerospace Engineering were obviously 50x more important, we were just "goofing around and playing games". Our teacher left anyways, so it probably sucks ass nowadays.

I wish our school did something similar to that, our school doesnt really have "a lot" of money. All we have access to is Windows xp office edition. I dont really have a "powerful Stack" at home either, a decent laptop with windows 7 though. So I just try teaching myself the best I can by expierimenting and watching tutorials on YouTube...
