I've noticed this problem since last night. It seems like whenever I stall any part of my external drive for too long (a few seconds), I get a message saying Windows Explorer has crashed. I had also gotten a message after Windows had checked my F:\ drive with CHKDSK saying that my external drive was dirty.

If my drive is failing, this is very bad, because I have less space on my two internal hard drives combined than on my external (240 vs. 300). I can salvage my most important data, but is this the end of my external, or do I just need to format?

Also, as a sidenote, I also poked around and noticed DivX has been crapping around on my computer and am trying to get rid of it. When I was trying to open up a movie file on root was when it first happened. Would it be safe to assume that DivX might have done something to affect my drive, the file itself, or just an odd coincidence?

Maybe the drive is corrupted? Maybe it's just really dusty in there?

Please be more descriptive about what you mean by "stall".

As for the drive itself, it doesn't sound like any kind of hardware failure. Explorer crashing is usually more indicative of a software issue. It could be possible that some file o directory structure is corrupted in an odd way that crashes it, though. Might want to see if you can fix whatever problem chkdsk finds, and also try using the drive on another computer.

By stall I mean staying on a certain part of my drive for several seconds. Browsing. I'm attempting to run chkdsk, but apparently I can't fix file system errors unless I "restart my computer". However, when I did restart my computer, it didn't do anything. Right now I'm on Mini XP running chkdsk, and so far I'm only in the early stages of phase 2, I'm having it scan and attempt recovery of bad file sectors.

Also, it seems that I can browse my drive in here, so it could be a software issue instead of hardware. Still, if I lose this drive, I lose over half of my drive space, so naturally I am a little concerned over that.

EDIT: Aaaand after going booting into Hi-ren's and deleting that file, the problem seems to be solved. Had a friend over and he really wanted to watch Independence Day, so he torrented it. Since it was sort of out of my control over actually having the file download, I'm going to make this official: NO ONE IS ALLOWED NEAR MY COMPUTER EVER AGAIN WITHOUT EXPLICIT PERMISSION AND CONDITIONS.

Nobody uses my machine. I don't even like my parents using it.

"My machines! My machines! My! My! My! MY MACHINES!" "Whose machines?" "MY MACHINES!"

If you know where that comes from, you get a kitty.

Yeah, I hate when people use my computer, or even watch me when I'm using it. Luckily most people don't know how to use my computer, so that helps a bit.

DivX or another codec may be the real cause of the problem. Windows Explorer likes to be helpful and generate thumbnails of video files, and if the video decoder crashes while it's generating a thumbnail, Explorer crashes too. (I once had my computer doing this.)

Push Winkey-L to leave your computer alone for more than five minutes

Download the Windows Debugger, attach to the explorer.exe process after it crashes. Open up threads, find the thread that has KiUserExceptionDispatcher in its call stack. This is the thread that crashed the program. Figure out what it was doing at the time.

Here's a quick how to.

Yeah, I swear by this, it keeps people off of it indefinitely.
