This has happened to a couple of my friends; they used to *swear* by PCs and Windows and such, but then they had some sort of campus that required them to purchase an overpriced lowercase-i computer, and now that they've been forced to use it for class, they got accustomed to it, and like it better than PC.

Normally, I'd be fine with this, but they (sometimes with some of our other lowercase-i friends) keep trying to push lowercase-is on me. I have an issue with Apple that leads me to stay away from their lowercase-i products, much like how an oil spill would cause someone to stay away from the faulting-company's petrol. Not to mention, my position as a game designer pretty much mandates me to stay away from lowercase-i products, because who the hell plays games on a Mac? Seriously. So it's pretty obvious that I don't have any lowercase-i products.

The worst thing about all of this is that I probably would love iProducts to death if I used them a lot, kinda like how I now love coffee, ever since I've had to drink it for health reasons (well, it's mainly that I figured out a way to drink it that makes it taste good).

However, in addition to the aforementioned reason for me staying away from iProducts, seeing their abundance on the market is actually kinda frightening, especially given how everyone now has to copy them, whatever they do. It's almost like GPL, but in physical form, really.

Technology sucks. :\

I swear by whatever gets me my damn porn. In this case, it's a windows machine because I will likely become flaccid before I figure macs the hell out.

I'm kind of a person that doesn't like to jump on bandwagons. Therefore, you won't find me getting any Apple products just because some of my friends have them or whatever the case may be... There has to be motivation in me to get one of these products. It has to fill a need. In my case, I have a blackberry... and I hate the damn thing. The GUI and software were coded by nothing more than a group full of monkeys. App support is horrible. I can't do the things I want to do on it, so I want to replace it with an iPhone 4 soon. I don't rule out Droid phones, though.

But yeah, one of the reasons I haven't got into the whole Mac business is because of its userbase. I find them to be mostly overly snobtastic pricks whose egos must be appeased or you are shit to them. If they ever find out you're a PC user you are automatically considered trash, and will be treated as such.

Xubuntu is the only OS I've ever used that I really consider to have actually worked. XP tended to work, but not well, and needed a lot of support and maintenance and tweaking to get to that point and remain there. Other versions of Windows and even other distros of Linux I've tried have all had pretty severe flaws. Xubuntu isn't perfect, but it's usable. (If you can get your video card's drivers to work at all. )

It's been a long time since I used a Mac, but I've seen how Apple does things these days. No goddamn way. As many have pointed out in the past, Apple seems to have a reality distortion field that makes many people completely fail to notice all the severe flaws in the product they're about to buy, that costs 4 times as much as a more functional but maybe slightly less pretty version, from a company who treats their userbase like utter trash.

Technology is indeed a pain in the ass, though. It's just less a pain than not having it.

Yep, that was another reason.

I don't have a smartphone, but I'm most definitely getting a Droid when it's time.

Well, I wanted an iphone4 because of the display it's using. I'm one of those dudes that can read the bottom fucking line on the chart so pixel density is important to me. Maybe then I can gain the respect of fellow apple fans and slap that gay little apple logo on the back of my vehicle.

Truthfully, Macs have some decent stuff, except the more they move away from the Unix core they used in OSX, the more broken and messed up it gets.

Better to make them all look like fools and get Linux, then dual-boot or emulate Windows. :p

I do need to give Macs a better chance though. The only thing I can see preventing me from getting one is money. Last time I tried using a mac (10 years ago) I couldn't figure out how to eject the floppy disk. Took me 15 fucking minutes.

I can't stand people like this, and this actually is coming from a Mac user. I don't really like Apple (the company) itself, but I do like my G4.

Hell, I bought this thing earlier this year because I just wanted to get a grip on the OS in case I ever got stuck using it, and to offload a few tasks from my PC. Ended up switching to it when my primary PC started choking a lot more, though. (but that was ubuntu 9.10, what on earth should I have expected) I've been thinking a bit of heading back to using that as my main since reinstalling XP on it though. Different things work better for different people, I guess.

KP: If you actually really want to try one, I'd suggest picking up a used one (even a PowerPC G4/G5 is still quite usable these days). It won't set you back TOO much. If you do pick up an Intel machine, though, be aware that you can still run Windows on it if you decide you don't like OS X, so it wouldn't quite be a waste.

You know, I think I might just do that. Problem is, I've been so excited over building lasers and drooling over 3DS and such that I doubt I'll ever actually get the money do buy one. But who knows, I might actually somehow get one sometime. All I have is this netbook and I was really looking forward to getting a PC... so maybe I'll get an intel machine. Are the newer macs upgradeable?

As far as I'm aware, the Mini is only upgradable when it comes to RAM. The iMac is upgradable, as far as I'm aware, but it's probably a bitch to do. The Mac Pro is completely upgradable (as far as I can tell), but it'll also blow your fucking wallet away. They're powerful things, though, but I don't keep up with that line very well.

If you really want a PC, but want to try a Mac, you could try to build a Hackintosh. Your degree of success may vary, though. Honestly, I'd just pick up a cheap G4/G5 if I were in your case. If OS X turns out not to be for you, there's always Linux (and maybe MorphOS?) to run on those things.

Alright, thanks. I've always wanted to familiarize myself with that MacOS so I would finally know how to eject a disc. (And just like you, in case I find myself in a situation where I had to use one)

I also wanted to get used to linux, and this old-fangled command line thing it has going on. Something tells me I'd have a hard time with it though... but who knows.

Actually, come to think of it, I think I got in a fight with a macfag once because of how stuck up he was. Guess who won?

It's the same with PC users to MACs too, really. There's also all these rivalrys with ISPs, search engines, game consoles and it's all the same shit that no one really cares about except for those who have a fetish for arguments.

I'd say the idea of Mac superiority still reigns supreme above most of these, which makes it noteworthy to mention above the rest. You're right though, it's all based on the love of heated debate and beating the shit out of each other.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I had a macbook pro for about a year (Until it was stolen.) and I rarely used it. I used mac os for a while but rather than growing on me, it just irritated me until I just threw windows on it, which I also wasn't crazy about because I usually use linux but there didn't seem to be much in the way of compatible drivers.

I replaced it with a CONSIDERABLY cheaper and much more powerful PC laptop that I am much happier with and use much more often. It also has a nicer screen. Macbook Pros, while they have a really high pixel density have really piss-poor screens.

Also, my iphone is starting to act wonky and I've been getting annoyed by it in general, so I'll probably get an android phone. Waiting on the droid 2 hopefully which I guess is supposed to have a physical keyboard.

The only reason I want out of this blackberry mess is because I want software that isn't shit. I want to get on IRC with my phone, and I want to be able to browse the internet without having to deal with the feeling of wanting to chuck this thing in a fucking wood chipper. Also iPhone4 looks pretty. I might get a Droid because of the multitasking on it though...

I *do* want one of those 1600p screens that apple/hp/gateway sells, though. Smexy.

Macs simply don't appeal to me.

Chances are, there's nothing I can do on them that I can't do on my PC. If then, what's the point of paying 2x for more or less the same specs?

Also: Games

But yeah, I'm not too big of an Apple fan. I do have an iPod touch, which is kinda annoying. Seriously, Apple's hardware can be sexy.

But its software is pretty bleh.

EDIT: And I honestly wouldn't dislike Linux if it wasn't exactly like this

I have an iPhone 3GS (running iOS 3.1.2) and it's pretty cool. Browsing works well (although Mibbit crashed Safari a few times before I got a proper IRC client). Although keep in mind that the stock OS is quite incapable.

I jailbroke it and installed some stuff and it's now far more usable (ProSwitcher for multitasking, SBSettings for settings/process management, plus other stuff I can't remember). Oh yeah, and it multitasks better than iOS 4 can, because it can run IRC/IM apps in the background

The only issue with non-Apple multitasking is RAM usage (a lot of apps are quite memory leaky) but SBSettings takes care of that -- it can show the amount of free RAM in the statusbar, and there's a "Free Up Memory" button in the Processes menu which works pretty well ... although I have no idea how it works.

But it's not really that bad... I can run Colloquy (with around 18 channels), IM+ and Safari (with 2-3 tabs) at once and still easily have 50mb left (out of 256mb total).

Yeah, I've been hearing that a jailbroken iphone is the best way to go. Lots of stuff can be done with one. Are any iphones (before 4g) capable with Verizon if it's jailbroken?

No idea if it's possible or not ... I don't live in the US, mine came factory unlocked (but also cost more for that reason).

This page says you can unlock a 3GS on 3.1.x using Ultrasn0w from Cydia (package manager), but I'm unsure if it'd work on Verizon or not...
