Remember kids, it's not the voltage that kills; it's the amperage.

Unless you're a computer.

That's why static electricity doesn't hurt you (although it can feel uncomfortable) but it kills computer components, if I remember my AP Computers class from 2003-2004.

Which is why I always touch a radiator when I open my computer.

I was always taught to wear an ESD wrist strap and hook it onto the metal of your computer case. Then, a few years later I found myself building a computer in a plastic case. I think I ended up clipping the strap to some other computer that was nearby

I think it's electrostatic discharge Close enough.

I've also heard advice of just touching something metal periodically.

Zero: Electrostatic Discharge, you have to be careful of that when working on a computer, DVD player, VCR, TV, whatever...

Remember that current kills, not voltage, so you could survive 1 megavolt but at a very low current (such as 1000 µA). =P

Paulguy's Post configuration
What I find works best is to keep the power cord plugged in but the main switch on the back off, so the case is still grounded to the earth but nothing is powered. Just working on the computer and holding the case will naturally discharge static through the case, and I've never had anything fry or anything like that doing this. I don't know how well the case will ground if it's not attached to anything, but not likely as well as with a low impedance connection to earth ground. Only time this would probably be unwise to do is during a lightning storm.

I'm always concious about those things when I work with electrical equipment, so usually I turn it off at the plug, leave it for 15 minutes, then unplug it, wait another 5 minutes for everything to discharge, and then I'd open it

The ROM chips are what gets fried by ESD, usually. It rewrites what's in them, ruining them, as those same chips are programmed by electrical currents being run through them in the ROM programmer.

What is ROM used for?

Nowadays, I believe it's still used for the BIOS, which handles the computer's startup tasks and loads the operating system or boot loader, and for a basic character set used in text mode.

In the old days, often the entire OS including goodies like a BASIC interpreter would be in ROM.

Other things like Memory and the southbridge/northbridge have their own ROM, depending on the design of the motherboard. Also, many PCI-E and PCI cards also have them.

And hard drives have a chip or two as well.

That's why they're all vulnerable to shock. If they didn't have it, they'd be more resillient...

...But also nothing more than a dumb block of capacitors and resistors. :p
