No more mixing the directions up and your stuff not working. At least not in Microsoft devices, but they are licensing out to other companies. The bit about putting batteries in a flash light in the dark makes sense, its not an easy task.

I don't usually check for the + or -, I just go "The flat end touches the spring".

I like this idea. Sure, I've never had a problem with this, but I'm sure tons of people do. Hooray for technology!

Same here, but then I get confused when smaller devices (like my wireless mouse) don't have a springs...

They also mentioned this is good for people with mental or learning disabilities, which I agree. While it may seem simple enough for us to look at the diagram and follow instructions, for some its just not quite that easy because of their disability.

This is pretty cool, as some electronic products don't have a spring for the (-) end and/or the (+) and (-) ends look almost identical. =/

It's annoying how I go to put batteries in something, then it doesn't work... then I get white dust all over the battery compartment (it's happened to me a couple of times =/)

This has been possible for as long as we've had semiconductor diodes. (Which, by the way, is at least 50 years.) And it only takes four diodes per battery!

I'm disappointed it took this long.

Are they seriously patenting a diode arrangement?!

The only thing novel about this is that they're using one bridge rectifier (read: four diodes) for each battery, then wiring the positive/negative outs of those together.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rectifier#Full-wave_rectification

I'm going to be the old geezer here who opposes this new technology.

I guess I like my batteries to go in one specific direction always. :|

Just another thing to break. A neat idea, but little practical use.

I have a Bluetooth keyboard that has a spring on both ends. FFFFFFUUUUUUUU... it's a fucking pain to load batteries into. I want to slap the idiot who designed that.

This doesn't really account for that little problem you have there...
