Oh right. When we set up a gun registry here in Alberta, someone brought in a flamethrower

Totally legal in the United States, and for a very interesting reason. Waay back in the day, when Africanized Honey Bees found their way up from South America, there was a team of firefighters that used flamethrowers (that's ironic) to keep them away from a schoolhouse full of children.

Yeah, flamethrowers are something I would be *glad* my neighbor would have, what with those damned things

Well you can argue that guns are needed to protect people from criminals with guns, but it's really not the case most of the time.

I have a friend from a really bad neighborhood in South Philadelphia(like Willie Smith) and he desperately wants to see stricter gun laws. Unfortunately, as it goes in the US, cities cannot have stricter gun laws than the state. And seeing that he lives in Pennsylvania, I doubt it will happen anytime soon.(Pennsylvania is often referred to as "pennsyltucky" for a reason)

There's quite a few gangs around him. And aside from a lack of immediate urgency from the cops, bystanders often end up in crossfire. He's had to run from stray bullets, and had a few of his buddies killed from the senseless violence. These aren't people smuggling in arms from foreign countries. They're just getting them here. We need stricter gun laws.

From Wikipedia quoting a political consultant:

Between Paoli and Penn Hills, Pennsylvania is Alabama without the blacks. They didn't film "The Deer Hunter" there for nothing -- the state has the second-highest concentration of NRA members, behind Texas.

Yeah, I had absolutely no idea about that... I live in West Chester, which I think falls in the Philly metropolitan region, whew.

I think I'd feel more comfortable with stricter gun laws ... but I'm really conflicted with the issue ... Any statistics that countries with much stricter gun laws have less homicides?

"A horrible person". That's what it says. "A horrible person."

We weren't even testing for that.

Quite the contrary. It makes no difference at all. See Germany, which has one of the strictest gun laws in the entire world and yet, students run amok at schools almost yearly.

Prince Kassad: that is not a 1:1 analogy so I can disregard it.

Well FieryIce, I'm not sure if stricter gun laws per se mean less crimes but I do know that in areas where gun laws are pretty much nonexistent, there is a greater possibility for chaos. However that doesn't say much.

All that is saying is that people who are wanting guns are the people who intend to use them maliciously.

In britain, gun crime is pretty rare, usually it's knife crimes we get instead (about 5 stabbings happen in london every day / 3 in glasgow every day)

I know that (especially as a girl) if I knew that having a gun while walking alone (especially at night) would absolutely deter all thieves and rapists and other "bad people," I know that I would to get my hands on a gun for the "just in case" scenario. However, since these conditions aren't guaranteed, I don't. I also don't think I could bring myself to pull the trigger, in case just showing it and threatening wasn't enough

What I'm trying to say is that "evil" people aren't the only ones wanting guns; people who want to protect themselves from evil people also would like to have them too.

Unfortunately, both bad people and good people have access to them when laws permit it, and since bad people tend to use guns for bad things, we tend to hear it a lot more. Some guy keeping a shotgun in his closet in case robbers come isn't nearly as interesting to report on as a homicide.

Truthfully, at least where I live, I want a decent handgun in case some thug tries to rob me. Rather than deal with their BS I'd prefer to deter them, whether it be simply by brandishing the gun at them or as severe as shooting a hole in them.

However I do not agree in variously being able to have assault rifles and flamethrowers and everything short of nuclear bomb throwers. In the wrong hands (I.E. psycho people like the Columbine killers) this suddenly turns into a slaughter, which would have been less destructive had they only had pistols or 'sane' guns.

Whereas handguns and other things of a smaller nature are more precise when it comes to 'Leave me alone' and invite less 'I have the power! Die die die!' that some of the big guns might do.

Honestly, as a denizen of a mostly disarmed country in terms of civilian population the thought of every person owning firearms scares the hell out of me.

Then again, it's not something that'll change in America until that entrenched gun culture does.

Which will probably be never, as the gun culture traces its roots pretty far back... unfortunately.

It's a bit too late to change the laws now anyway.. after companies have made billions off it, billions of guns are out there and many crime syndicates have a black market for firearms.

Changing them now would just be.. well, stupid.
