| Conte: Yea Gundam is massively popular. Zeta Gundam is the sequel to the original TV series and it's rather dark at times. I personally think it deals with the atrocities of war better than the original series did. Also the mecha designs and fights are awesome. You never know who will come out alive.
Also if you like manly anime, watch city hunter or votoms.(the latter of which has a new ova) City Hunter features a "sweeper"(PI/bodyguard for hire) named Ryo Saeba who's a great shot, playboy, and pervert all rolled into one. It's kinda like Lupin in that all the episodes are jobs he takes; making it almost entirely filler. However, it's filler that reflects upon the characters' personalities. Nonetheless it's just pure 80s entertainment and fun. Known as 'Nicky Larson' in France. Armored Trooper Votoms may sound and look like a typical mech show, and it is anything but. It's more like a sci-fi action thriller. The main character, Chirico Cuvie, is sent on a mysterious mission and is left to die. He travels throughout space trying to find out what's going on. It's very cool and Chirico is an ultimate badass. He was part of an elite group of soldiers so he's just gotta be. Also I love the opening song! Also I can say with all honesty I have not seen anything quite as mature, deep, and original as Legend of Galactic Heroes. You can call it a space opera with huge ship battles but that wouldn't begin to describe it properly. There are so many well developed characters and such an interesting plot that it will make your head spin. The show itself is not confusing. It's mainly about two powers: the galactic empire and the free republic. It may sound typical but it's really not. It's an OVA that lasted from 1989 to 1997, with 110 episodes and is nothing short of epic. There are plenty of thrilling and graphic action scenes as well. It shows you the harsh realities of politics, war, and civil unrest. I consider it a must-watch for anyone. It breaks all stereotypes set by anime. If you hate this show purely because it's an anime, then you are close-minded. It immediately carves out a universe with its own deep and rich history where if you give it time, you will really care about what happens to each character. It's really fascinating. Also, it has masterfully orchestrated soundtrack(s) to boot. Maison Ikkoku is a really funny, very entertaining show about a ronin(not masterless samurai but a college applicant who keeps failing his entrance exams) who lives in the titular dwelling with other tenants and has a crush on the new landlord. It's not cutesy like today's romantic comedy anime. It's from the 80s and is really fun, funny, and sweet. If you've ever had a crush on someone and didn't know how to deal with it, you'd sympathize with Godai(main character) in at least some point in the show. In case you can't tell from the character designs, this show is by Rumiko Takahashi, who also made Inu Yasha and Ranma 1/2. I think Maison Ikkoku is her best work though. I was really really rootin' for my main man Godai the whole way through. I can do more sums per request but I need to eat breakfast. |
