Conte: Yea Gundam is massively popular. Zeta Gundam is the sequel to the original TV series and it's rather dark at times. I personally think it deals with the atrocities of war better than the original series did. Also the mecha designs and fights are awesome. You never know who will come out alive.

Also if you like manly anime, watch city hunter or votoms.(the latter of which has a new ova)

City Hunter features a "sweeper"(PI/bodyguard for hire) named Ryo Saeba who's a great shot, playboy, and pervert all rolled into one. It's kinda like Lupin in that all the episodes are jobs he takes; making it almost entirely filler. However, it's filler that reflects upon the characters' personalities. Nonetheless it's just pure 80s entertainment and fun. Known as 'Nicky Larson' in France.

<object width="480" height="385"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fg_zsdadF1s&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Armored Trooper Votoms may sound and look like a typical mech show, and it is anything but. It's more like a sci-fi action thriller. The main character, Chirico Cuvie, is sent on a mysterious mission and is left to die. He travels throughout space trying to find out what's going on. It's very cool and Chirico is an ultimate badass. He was part of an elite group of soldiers so he's just gotta be. Also I love the opening song!

<object width="480" height="385"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ic7s_JHi_So&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Also I can say with all honesty I have not seen anything quite as mature, deep, and original as Legend of Galactic Heroes. You can call it a space opera with huge ship battles but that wouldn't begin to describe it properly. There are so many well developed characters and such an interesting plot that it will make your head spin. The show itself is not confusing. It's mainly about two powers: the galactic empire and the free republic. It may sound typical but it's really not. It's an OVA that lasted from 1989 to 1997, with 110 episodes and is nothing short of epic. There are plenty of thrilling and graphic action scenes as well. It shows you the harsh realities of politics, war, and civil unrest. I consider it a must-watch for anyone. It breaks all stereotypes set by anime. If you hate this show purely because it's an anime, then you are close-minded. It immediately carves out a universe with its own deep and rich history where if you give it time, you will really care about what happens to each character. It's really fascinating. Also, it has masterfully orchestrated soundtrack(s) to boot.

<object width="480" height="385"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Sken4RHX9FY&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Maison Ikkoku is a really funny, very entertaining show about a ronin(not masterless samurai but a college applicant who keeps failing his entrance exams) who lives in the titular dwelling with other tenants and has a crush on the new landlord. It's not cutesy like today's romantic comedy anime. It's from the 80s and is really fun, funny, and sweet. If you've ever had a crush on someone and didn't know how to deal with it, you'd sympathize with Godai(main character) in at least some point in the show.

<object width="480" height="385"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Gm8cMmWWG7Q&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

In case you can't tell from the character designs, this show is by Rumiko Takahashi, who also made Inu Yasha and Ranma 1/2. I think Maison Ikkoku is her best work though. I was really really rootin' for my main man Godai the whole way through.

I can do more sums per request but I need to eat breakfast.

I can't even READ this thread without facepalming and trying to hide my face from the failure that has been posted.

Go watch Toradora, Higurashi, and the rest of the stuff people have talked about here, then feel free to make your biased uneducated bullshit opinions. If you can watch any of the listed stuff here -IN IT'S ORIGINAL LANGUAGE- (English dubs fuck up just about everything) from start to finish and still think that Anime and Manga are just the worst art style with the worst storylines then you probably don't know what animated entertainment is and should consider finding a different field to work in.

Arguably, so would Shinchan, but that's more of a Gag Dub. Again, this is all subjective, but still.

More like a generic stereotype that english dubs suck.

True, but dubs haven't sucked that badly for a long time. Like, since... 1995. I would argue that it's a stereotype that could do with some adjustment.

(EDIT: whoa that was stupidly worded.)

4Kids Entertainment licensed the series (One Piece) for an English language dubbed broadcast and release in North America. The 4Kids episodes aired in the United States on the Fox network as part of the Fox Box block, premiering on September 18, 2004. The first 143 episodes of the original were cut down to 104 in the dubbed version. The remaining content was subject to heavy editing

Remember, all it takes is one bad major dubbing group to poison the image for everyone.

And don't even get me started on what Nelvana did to Card Captor Sakura.

To be honest I haven't really minded 4Kids Pokemon dub so far, and I'm in the middle of Season 4. Any cut episodes have been included in the archives I've downloaded so I'm not missing anything.

On a related note, good god now I understand why that Porygon episode was never aired again. If I were epileptic I would have been dying watching that.

I've watched a lot of fucking anime with dual audio and I occasionally swap between it and the dubs to see how they handle certain scenes and it's always a boatload of voice actor fail and censored/changed storyline.

It's not a stereotype, it's fact. And I very much disliked the lifelessness and non-character-fittingness of Trigun in English. Couldn't stomach it at all. Haven't seen Cowboy Bebop or Cromartie High School.

Arguably so horrid that it's hilarious.

Also, on dubs, even though I dislike it, InuYasha had a decent dub...

Also, Ranma 1/2's was good (even if a bit wordy), Death Note's was pretty okay (I'LL TAKE A POTATO CHIP... AND EAT IT!), and then there's Dragon Ball Z

Dragon Ball Z, as stally and long as it is, managed to get a pretty awesome dub.

Gurren Lagann's dub gets better in the second season. Kyle Herbert, as good a VA he is, does not pull off a manly enough Kamina. He's more of an Ox King/Narrator/Gohan kinda guy, and even a Tomitake. Oh, he's Ryu too.

On 4kids, as terrible as EVERYTHING ELSE they put out is, Pokemon was good, and for fucks sakes Yugioh had MOTHERFUCKING DAN GREEN.

While I don't care for anime (Gee, I'm running that phrase into the ground), I myself have found the original language versions to be superior, and would agree that much of the hatred may in fact be related to the hideously bad job that's done on most English dubs.

Additionally, it does no good to be ethnocentric; just because one dislikes Anime doesn't mean they then need to assert, say, American animation is superior because it's American. That's just silly. Anime didn't kill your mother, did it, CDC? :p

The issue here is that 4kids localized One Piece as a kids' show. (and CCS as a... boy's action... thing? I have no idea, it wasn't my thing in either language. D: )

Unfortunately, children's shows in the US generally don't include things like guns pointed at people's heads or smoking, because apparently these things cause kids' heads to explode in America. If they localized it aimed at teenagers, then we wouldn't get as fucked-up of an adaptation. But then again, from the perspective of the suits at 4kids, a kid is more likely to identify with a rubber-band-boy pirate's adventures for magical treasure than a teenager is, because kids like silly things like that.

Meanwhile....

I'd personally disagree on that. I actually prefer the dub of Trigun, because 1: Vash's English VA puts in a bit more effort than his Japanese one, and 2: Milly doesn't sound like she's 3. She's still a ditzy airhead, but her voice matches her (holy shit tall) body. True, that was part of the joke in the original, but that really, honestly fell flat with me. Reiterated: This is subjective.

Haven't seen Cowboy Bebop or Cromartie High School.

You probably should, then. Cowboy Bebop has some of the best dubbing I've heard, in comparison to the japanese voice acting, they capture the same essence of every character. Cromartie High School's James Faulkner, who voiced Noboru, definately has the best voice I've heard in an english dub.
