Quite an interesting one. One of the more viral dating sim games to have graced the planet has a nice little measure against it if you try to get it without some means of getting around its anti-piracy measures...

You can't go on dates. Period.

If that isn't a cock-block, I don't know what is.

“It is impossible to raise the affection levels of any of the girls when playing it on a flashcard that does not remove the [anti-piracy], meaning you cannot go on dates, cannot get ANY contact (except Rinko’s, since it is given to you in an event that can be triggered without any indication Rinko is there), and cannot get a confession of love from any of the girls.

Incidentally, it would also appear the ‘boyfriend checks’ are somewhat based on affection levels.”

Not really new. A lot of Rare games crippled themselves similarly. DK64 was nice enough to delete your save file late in the game.

Allow me to interject then.

THIS IS A GAME IN JAPAN THAT PEOPLE LITERALLY BUY MATERIAL POSSESSIONS FOR THEIR GAME GIRLFRIEND AND BUY PERFUME TO GET THE SCENT OF THEM DOING WHATEVER IT IS

Now...

But are people going to get the chance to "get to know" these characters well enough to fall in love if they can't actually play the game? It's like a Tetris game that doesn't allow you to actually place bricks - sure Tetris is addictive but you're not really going to develop an addiction with a restriction like that.

This is a game which allows you to place bricks but never lets you actually clear lines.

Jesus christ, the point of this thread must've got some fucking distance to soar over all these heads.

That would still get old long before it got addictive. Keep in mind that probably few of us have actually played this series.

Nobody here has played this series as it is Japan only as far as I know.

And it is very disturbing what people will do for this.

Most people that are 'addicted' that want this 'illegally' are going to be hikkokimoris. People that are stuck indoors, without cash, and no way of getting games legally and LOVE games like this.

This method is the ultimate stake to the heart for people like them.

There, it is spelled out now for people who don't get it.

One of the things I do like about AP measures on DS games is that some developers go the extra mile; not having NPC's show up at certain points, not allowing stats to progress, etc.

But cockblocking tens of thousands of Japanese males? New high point.

This is the best piracy warding ever.

On the other hand, God knows what will it cause... There WILL be at least one strange news story coming from this.

Although if they get too inventive, It creates the desire to pirate it just to see the protections for novelty value

Such "protections" can also make it look like the game just sucks (design-wise or programming-wise) and/or fails to function, thus earning it a negative reputation and deterring those who do the try-before-you-buy thing. It's a double-edged sword. A lot of these tricks wouldn't make me even consider "maybe only pirated copies do that", just "man, fuck this game".

I got bit a while ago by a PS2 RPG: It works in the menus (which you spend like 20 minutes in before even actually starting the game), but crashes when you actually start. (Just too bad I was playing a legitimate backup copy. ) Annoying, but at least then it's pretty obvious what happened.
