Hi. I am hacking Super Mario Bros. with no title screen for NES.

I need to edit the Tile Squaroid Assembly for Mario's sprite. I messed up the TSA for Mario and don't remember the location of the data.

I would appreciate your help if you know where it can be found. I will definitely check back for replies to this thread. Thank you.

I love to play good hacks of this game.

First, you really want a clean dump of the rom. If it has no title screen, odds are there are a few things more wrong with the rom.

SMB Graphic Workshop will let you easily edit the tilemaps.

Back in the early 2000s, ROMs were a lot harder to find on the Web and the no-title dump was incredibly common.

I think that's also the ROM that likes to dump Mario in "World 0-1" on some emulators. Most of my older SMB1 hacks (like 30 or so in all) are patched to that ROM, and I don't save the IPS files, and some Web sites have gone down years ago, so I'm stuck with them unless I do some un-patching and re-patching thing 30 times.

SMB Graphic Workshop did the trick. Thanks!

You could get to World 0-1 on the original game too via the first warp zone pipe on level 1-2. You just had to enter it before the words "Welcome to Warpzone" appeared.

That was actually World -1 or, technically, World (space)-1, not the same as World 0-1.

In an unhacked SMB1 ROM, World -1 is a duplicate of 2-2/7-2 (with the 7-2 enemies), but the pipe pointer doesn't work as it's only programmed to work in Worlds 2, 3, and 7. (Why 3, I don't know.) World 0-1 is an underwater version of World 4-4 in which the maze path doesn't work (it's only programmed to activate itself in World 4).

Yeah, IIRC that version isn't playable on proper emulators (no escape from world 0), and just relied on bugs in older ones.

Well, you could press A and Start to begin at World 1 at the beginning

IIRC, Nestopia would randomly malfunction with that ROM, but FCEUX would always fail. I wish some newer emulator could have like a "Nesticle Compatibility Mode" to run these ROMs (once again, I have about 30 patched versions of the ROM for which the .ips files were deleted years ago and many Web sites I got them from went under long ago, too). Seems to me the problem is that Nesticle, but not more accurate emulators, zeroes the RAM out when loading a new ROM? That doesn't seem too hard to add as an optional feature that can be turned on and off. (probably off by default would be best, or allow it to be set per ROM.)

A proper "Nesticle Compatibility Mode" would be pretty difficult, because you'd have to emulate all the bugs - Nesticle's emulation was about as accurate as your average movie villain's bullets. Zeroing RAM might get that ROM working though.
