Comes with GPU encoding now.

So now you don't have to have a badass CPU to render 1080p streams. Just a decent GPU/CPU mix.

And they've removed Shoutcast support because AOL are dooshes.

It certainly does speed up encoding over here.

I also hear they added NEON and DSP optimizations, too. :o

That'll be cool for portables.

Yea, I just upgraded my VLC recently, but I haven't played around with it enough to see how much of an improvement it is...

Pretty nifty, but it looks like the way they do it has the video card sending decompressed frames back to the CPU. (It also isn't supported in Windows XP, but that's not surprising.)

It seems to work in XP x64, but XP x64 has more in common with Windows Server 2003 than XP.

Decoding is more likely, but very possible that they do have GPGPU based encoders for some codecs, which would be kinda neat, though even using multiple cores with x264 hurts compression ratio so who knows what effect GPGPU might have... may be useful if you need real time encoding at all costs for streaming or something, but may not be very good if you want to store or distribute the video. and blah blah blah I'm going on about nothing as usual blah blah

Well, it's interesting to me, but that's because it'd make it a lot quicker to encode video on my computer, and we have a pesky space-eating HD video camcorder...

There are no open-source GPU encoders.

Not by any amount you'd notice if you weren't looking for it, and adding --non-deterministic to the command line decreases that amount. (Or run multiple instances limited to one thread each, if you're encoding multiple videos.)

GPGPU is quite a bit different than simply throwing more CPU cores at the same task. All GPUs are designed to perform the same calculations at the same time (on different data) within groups of cores, so it's nearly useless for anything that cannot be done in parallel. Taking into consideration the relative slowness* between the CPU and GPU, this leaves very little that the GPU could do better.

CPU encoding is faster, and x264 already can do this.

So can you guess what I read about in my free time?

*I blame my sister for my use of this word.
