Those tiles are destroyed. The most you're going to get out of them is a nearest-neighbor guess or attempt to recreate; you'd probably be better off just setting it to the average of its nearest pixels.

At least it isn't totally destroyed.

Work in progress. Mind, this is sort of an "artists' rendition", but the little block next to the big grey formerly-blue-x'd block is actually fairly symmetrical, so I'd say that what I recreated is pretty damn close to the original. :o

Two new things:

First, the SM64DS debug screen that the wiki is talking about is also present in NSMB. In the E version the code works and displays the screen. However, on the U version the debug screen code gets run when an error occurs, but the keypad combination doesn't enable it. I've hacked it to get it working even without the key combination and it works, so only the key combination is broken.
There are videos on YouTube showing it on the E version.

On the sound_data.sdat, a sequence named BGM_VS_FAN_LOOP. It's stored right before the MvsL win and loose fanfares, but i have never heard it. Is it really unused?

Not in NSMB, certainly...

Anyways, the style of the music is quite similar to the music that sounds when waiting for connection in other multiplayer games (for example WFC in MKDS). But NSMB makes the usual title screen music...

Lighting effect 4 is unused.

Seems to be some sort of sunset or desert lighting effect.
Apparently you can see it in some beta video.
