I was shocked when my mum suddenly told me to apply for a job at Sainsbury's. Primarily because I wasn't expecting it. Then she told me that a daughter of a colleague of hers is making £140 a month just by working part-time on Saturdays. Considering the amount of stuff that I want but can never afford (graphics card, quad core, motherboard, various games, online subscriptions), I thought I should check it out. So far, it looks interesting. I'm applying for the Price and Advertising Controller position. As Sainsburys puts it:

Our customers need the right information – could you make sure that all pricing, ticketing and advertising materials are displayed correctly around the store? Yours will be an important role within the team. It will involve making changes to shelf-edge prices and advertising within given deadlines, helping out with the scan-checking of products and anticipating customer needs – such as when we have a special promotion. Knowledge of price control and scanning is important, and you will ideally have worked within food retail.

I've no idea what the pay is at the moment, but I won't be needing much. With any luck, I'll be starting next week I just need to wait for an e-mail from Sainsburys.

Any tips?

I actually don't know what to suggest, but i'm happy for you, having luck on finding a job: is there a law that minors cannot work?
I share this because i want to find a partime job for the summer too. but i don't know if i will find it due of the law, in my opinion, stupid law.

Well, I don't actually know if the job I'm applying for is open in either of the two stores that I have choices for. Concerning the law over here, it depends. Working in a business has a minimum age of 16 and you can only join on the last Friday of June on the year of your 16th birthday, which is tomorrow. Stuff like doing a paper round seems to be about 12 or 13. What is the law where you are?

EDIT: Judging by the failure of a website it has, I doubt I'll like it. The most important page of the website (the login page to apply) doesn't bloody load in and I already got locked out once because I took more than 10 minutes on one page.

Well, Sainsburys crapped out. There is one part-time job, but it's on the night-shift. By law, people under 18 cannot work the night-shift. I'm moving on to Iceland. Hopefully, I'll find something there!

EDIT: Oh look, Iceland crapped out too. Looks like I'm NOT getting a job after all.

I was working at 14, but I had to get a worker's permit from the county. I started off at the computer training center that my dad worked at. I was an "Account Executive Assistant" first, but then the janitor quit and they made me clean the class rooms so I guess I became the janitor... Can't complain, it was my first real job and allowed me to buy my Oakley Sunglasses ($300 at the time, was my first paycheck). I think was only there for a month before we ended up moving anyway.

So, good luck if you keep looking. It does help get you out of the house and busy for a little while. And you can buy your own stuff like I did.

I got a job at 15, working part-time at Limited Too... in fact, I worked there until I was almost 22 (even though I was getting sick of working there by the time I was 19 or 20...)

Now that I think about it, if I had gotten a job at that local game store when it opened, I could've left Limited Too when I wanted to instead of just before moving away... =/

You have to be 16 in order to work here and that's when I started.

I didn't have a job until I was 18, because before that I lived in a tiny village with few non-agricultural jobs Our family was a transplant from the city, so we didn't have a farm like a lot of families did.

My first job was as a part-time tutor of mathematics and computer programming. Then, I got a bizarre Web site researcher position that I never knew the actual job description of Now, I've moved and am unemployed once again.

You can be 14 to work, but have to get a permit to do so.

I didn't know about that until I was much older. But most places around here want you to be 16. 14 is more for farm work, right?

And other family jobs most of the time. I was able to work at the computer training center because my dad worked there and we were good friends with the owners.

I haven't had any need (or will) to work earlier than 18.

Technically, it is allowed for someone to work if he's over 15 (except in agriculture, where there is no lower limit). But available jobs for such young people typically are restricted to distributing the local newspaper.

Yep, that was another factor for me. My parents would buy me almost anything I wanted before I was 18, so I had no incentive to make my own money externally. I did get an allowance for a while and birthday/Xmas gifts, but those usually went into my savings.

Well, at the moment, I owe my dad about £60 from pre-ordering Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M. And considering that a job would get me way more than that, that's why I went for it. But I appear to be running out of options. There are only two possible places left and I think one of them is too far away.

Just know that you're going to have really steep competition wherever you apply to. I only got one real interview in the past 12 months, and that was in October. The other interview crapped out because no one was there to give me the interview, and if a place that was supposed to give student employment can do a simple thing like stay a little later to give an interview, then how in the hell could I trust that place to give me a job?

But keep trying.

That's what really worries me. I'm not all that good at computer programming although it was my area of study, and I don't think I can easily compete with people who code in their spare time and have lots of projects they've worked on for fun. It's like companies only want the top 1% of a given area, and I'm more just a jack of all trades.

I got my first job when I was 15 or 16 (working at Dunkin Donuts ). After that, I was a lifeguard for a bit.

I forget why I got a job. I think it was just to save up money for "some time in the future when I might need it." From time to time I'd buy a game or go out to dinner with friends, but I was never a "ZOMG letz go shopping @ teh mallz!"-type spender.

When I go back to school this semester, I'm going to apply for a job as a tutor

I started work when I was 14. First job was corn detasseling. Essentially, pull up a corn tassel (center point on top of the stalk). Now do it a million times for 8 hours in a field that gets really hot. Being in a denim shirt and jeans helps to where you're not getting torn up by the stalks but you're sweltering hot usually from it. Thankfully, I never passed out in a field from exhaustion. Was knocked out once, though, by some retard who thought it was funny to whip a corn stalk at the back of someone's head.

I don't even really remember it happening either. Just woke up and someone had said that had happened and two guys got fired from it. Went on working fifteen minutes later.

It was dull, but it paid well. I mean, seven bucks an hour for a fourteen-year-old is a lot of cash.
