What is Starcraft 2?

<object width="640" height="385"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/r7d5XheWiBk&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Starcraft 2 is the squeal for the world famous RTS game. Starcraft. It features three races. The Terran, a human race. The protoss, the Alien race, and the Zerg, the insect-like race. All fighting for domination. Twists and turns in the storyline share diplomatic strengths, and all in favor of an all out war.

This might be a stupid question: But isn't this from the same people who made Warcraft?

Hahahha, silly you. Of course it is! Starcraft is made by Blizzard Entertainment. Also the same people who brought you Diablo, World of Warcraft, and even the classic The Lost Vikings! Starcraft is just another section in the great minds blizzard has come up with. Making a space fantasy RTS that has become a phenomenon.

I'm not too into RTS games...

Don't worry. Starcraft may seem like it's complicated. But it's not. When playing online. Think of it as a Rock Paper Sizzor game...unless the other guy(s) against you are a little faster than you are. The right build order (It all takes practice) and the right hotkey can set you in the right direction. It may seem like it. But deep down inside it's one of the easiest RTS games to pick up. And also the most popular.

So what's new about Starcraft 2?

Story. More units to play around with. And an updated system to rage war in. It would take me hours to type up all the features. So instead, check out Starcraft 2's offical site. You can also look up some features on Google if you want to go deeper.

Soo...as always Bitmap. What's the gameplay like?

Glad you asked. Let's get some pros up in this bitch:

Holy hell I was awful at Starcraft II.

But I'm still buying it when it comes out.

Wins: 10
Loss: 3

Either I am playing against pros when I lose. Or there are a lot of shitty players online.

Also. Protoss for life.

I have never really been much of an big RTS fan. And even when I have played many titles such as, red alert 2 (+expansion), age of empires 1, 2 and mythology. I never really got into starcraft as it was just a bit too much for me.

Granted, this was many years back, but unless starcraft 2 takes steps into making it easier for gamers who did skip out on the first one, I might as well skip out on this one too and spend my money on other titles. At least, that's how I feel.

I guess it was personal perspective really. I mean to me Starcraft was the basics. Age of Mythologies had a little deeper element in upgrading ar--

you know, now that I think about it. Starcraft is a lot like the Ages games. Except for the fact that Age had much more factions than Starcraft (Unless you unlocked the Tech tree, then it was fair game)

Maybe you could give Starcraft another shot. SC2 is a LITTLE more complicated. And by little, I mean once you learn every new unit, you are back into the grove. But I still recommend the original before playing SC2 if you are new to the series. Just picking up SC2? Play skirmish a lot before playing online.

I've also recently found SCII to be an amazing spectator sport. I've been watching HD and Husky's commentated matches.

Ironically enough, I was just watching HD and Husky commentate a match where he played his brother, Tasteless.

I remember seeing this two years ago at a conference.

Can't believe it's finally coming out soon.

Just over month! My pre-order from Game stop is paid for already, my wife's isn't so we'll have to finish it once it comes out.

I think that they made StarCraft II feel like the same game, which is a good thing and bad thing. For starters, anyone who played the original can get right in and know what to do. The units are new, but there are a lot of old favorites. The game essentially plays the same. There are a lot of new elements that complicate gameplay and add more depth to the strategies, though. And the graphics are a huge improvement. Whether you have a top notch gaming machine or a simple brand-store PC, you can play this game.

Now for the downside, it is the same game as StarCraft but reskinned. Without being able to play the single player yet, there isn't much more to it than you could do with the original. My wife and I we're doing well in 2v2 for a while, averaging a 2:1 ration of wins and loses. But once it bumped us up a rank, we were at about 1:1. Then things got repetitive and we didn't want to play much anymore. I guess we shouldn't have played 12 matches in a row...

Anyway, it is a fun game and I am excited to play it again when it finally releases.

I'll get into it so long as others don't put it down within two weeks because the next best thing came out on the PC or another console and they're getting their ass kicked by Campaign mode so they'll jump ship.

That's the only problem I'd really have with dropping 60 bucks+ on this right now. Otherwise, it looks like a fantastic game.

I have not gotten around to... "testing" this to see if it'll run on my PC.

If it does, then it's a day 1 purchase.

I was really impressed with how the game both looks and feels. It really captures the essential nature of the original game, as well as the frantic pace and at least some of the positional mindgames. I never got around to playing with any of you in the beta which is a total shame so we'll play for sure when it comes out for real.

A lot of the things that I was worried about turned out fine. For example, I expected that for the sake of mass appeal some of the 'cheap' ways of winning the game would be less powerful, but the opposite happened. There are void rays and banshees, making going for air before your opponent has strong defense against it much more likely to be an instant win than in the original. Some ground units can absolutely ruin everything unless scouted and countered appropriately. If you are making marines, and the Protoss opponent makes colossi, get ready to watch your supply count cut itself in half in the first two shots of the battle - wait, what does that sound like? It sounds like the Zerg Lurker. I'm not sure I know any assessment more positive than "sounds like the Lurker."

Also I was one of the people concerned about the interface improvements, like making it possible to select multiple buildings at once, or setting a nexus's rally point to a mineral patch and having the workers that come out mine automatically. The issue is that the central pillar of StarCraft is needing to do five things and having time to do two of them, but more likely only one unless you're a king of speed. It's about prioritizing, multitasking, and outguessing your opponent. All of these things still matter, and you still have to bounce back between your base and your army often enough that the flow of the game is maintained.

So basically this is awesome, and I'll be showing you all what for in a month or so.

Never knew that... no wonder people could get minerals faster than us.

Same, my old PC would have had to run on low-medium settings. Now with my new laptop, I can play on max settings. Takes a little longer to load, but I get fluid FPS during gameplay.
