Hard drive must be dying/already dead... try booting a Linux CD or a Linux USB image and see if you can try to mount the hard drive from Linux. If you can, salvage as much of the data as you can... and then start investing in a new hard drive (or, if you have the extra money, a SSD). =)

	You can also use your Windows CD and run the repair tool. Sometimes a boot sector goes bad, or it could be your RAM. If those 2 options fail you, then it is dead. You can try replacing the hard drive and do a fresh installation, but depending on how old it is, you may be better off getting a new one. ____________________

0xED can be either a bad hard drive, bad IDE controller on the motherboard, bad cable, misconfigured system, corrupt filesystem.

It's about 90% bad hard drive though.

Things I would do:

Back up data and then run a hard drive testing utility (Seatools, WD Data lifeguard)

grab a registry editor and double check that there are no device filters on your hard drive (HKLM\System\ControlSet00x\Control\Class\{blah blah blah} where x is the Current value in HKLM\System\Select and blah blah blah is the key that says something along the lines of IDE Controller, you're looking for values of UpperFilter and LowerFilter, please tell me what they are.)

I'd also double check your BIOS to make sure you didn't accidentally change the hard drive mode from AHCI to IDE or something like that.

Then I'd double check to make sure your system files that control that are on the hard drive, for instance, if you have an nvidia board and you're on a 32-bit version of windows double check for nvstor32.sys in C:\Windows\System32\drivers

Finally I'd simply run check disk on it.

Yeah, has others have noted - at worst it seems like a dead hard drive, which can be easily replaced.

Burn a live disk like Ubuntu or Knoppix and everything seems stable, it's probably the hard drive. I'd buy an external drive to go with your new internal drive, copy over the data from the old hard drive from the live disk and move on with your life.

Definitely the first thing to do when you suspect disk failure is copy everything you can from it. (Assuming you don't already have a suitable backup.) Ideally, a complete image. You can then work to recover individual files from the image without fear of mechanical failure.

Well, thank you for suggesting the Linux live disk, as it has once again saved both mine and my data's asses. The hard drive does appear to be kaput, or at the very least dying as even Linux had issues copying many files over--I was able to get all the major important ones, at least. Thanks for the help, I'll probably have this taken in to Geek Squad (I know, I know) and looked at as I'm pretty sure I still have a warranty on this thing.

I would highly advise against taking it to Geek Squad, their job is to not fix your computer but to find ways of charging you for things outside that warranty..

Some precincts suck, some are ok, some are really good, it depends on who is working.

For hard drives, they may be able to fix it in store and it doesn't need to go out. Generally this is a can do with Toshibas.

Have them run it through RISE first to make sure they don't just swap computers for that model, it goes by model, so don't expect a new computer, but if you're lucky you can get one.

You also get a free OS restore if your hard drive goes out, so bring your discs.

The one here took 6 months to send my lappy to acer to fix the power button, then (A later time) about a month to open it up and put a new harddrive in.

It really does depend on which one you go to
