Seems to me that a lot of fictional characters lack 1 or both parents. So I'd go with "dead", or at least "gone".

Back when I watched TV frequently, I had Sabrina The Teenage Witch on and my dad asked where Sabrina's mom was, or some such.

But yes, he conveniently for the stepmother dies. As so did her mother. In short, [trope=MagnificientBastard]the stepmother killed them all systematically to gain their fortune[/trope] and wasted everything/kept all for herself prior to when the story takes place.
She didn't eat the corpses either, [trope=CompleteMonster]she gave them to the daughter as 'cheap food'. Possibly for just personal amusement.[/trope]
