Wouldn't that mean that you could essentially download ROMs onto there?

Well, sort of. It's like dumping the games in the system memory, from what I understand.

Wouldn't surprise me if that gave the SD slot an actual use.

I'm sure the games would be installed to the SD card.

Also, don't let your kids use your 3DS...

Let's hope installation isn't game specific and can be done for all of them.

And that they don't take too much space, because this could be very very nice.

So this might just be a rumor...

It has been a rumor since day one. It was a rumor from a Japanese tabloid magazine, that's it. No backing at all except that have had times where they were right about things before, not that it is a big accomplishment.

I also wonder what happened to Starhawk. The successor to the game Warhawk. Which was one of the first good games to come out when the PS3 went into the market.

Warhawk was actually a pretty good game. But there was one very big thing wrong with it. And that was the expansions.

<object width="640" height="385"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pejrUwuKoVQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Now, none of the expansions were shown in the video. But you can see that you can have land, air, tank, and turrent battles. All in a 64 player online map. And boy were those maps huge.

My beef with the expansions?

Many things really. The first expansion which brought in two new maps and a new vehicle. The new vehicle was the main "Trump Card" to your sides. Not only is it a huge ship, but it can also carry vehicles and kick some serious ass if you have eight people inside shooting Warhawks from the sky.

The second expansion brought two more maps and an APV. Basically a ground vehicle that can carry a lot of troops on the field. Note here, that not a lot of people bought this expansion because by that time. The community was moving on to bigger and better things.

Then they released the third and final expansion: Jetpacks

So, all of this might sound groovy. But why was it a mistake?

Say you own the game. You buy the third expansion. You are not allowed to play with ANYONE unless you own that third expansion. Sure, you can turn jetpacks off. But you were locked in that community. Also, you can NOT mix all three expansion vehicles into one map. Which was horseshit. I wish I could be flying around in a jetpack while shooting down APVs with a rocket launcher. That's not fair. And a waste of $21 for buying all three expansions.

Starhawk was teased countless times. And I was a little disappointed in hearing that it was not shown at E3. Here is hoping next year things will change. Warhawk is a great game by itself. If you have the money. I suggest buying it and playing a round or two online. It's about 15 bucks.

Perhaps a good final consensus:

The hardware of the 3DS, to me, is pretty much the only thing that makes Nintendo win E3. The hardware is just drool-inducing.

Games-wise, however, I can't say I'm impressed. Yes, there's tons of games, but they're relying far too much on really old franchises. Donkey Kong, Kirby, Zelda, etc., are all nice, but they're not mind blowing. At least they didn't look that way to me. Far too much reliance on nostalgia for my tastes, and aside from Kid Icarus (which I frankly saw coming from a mile away), none of their showings seemed "fresh" to me. Nostalgia doesn't work on me. Not for new games, at least.

Sony's conference was sort of a hit-and-miss. Aside from your typical Hi-I'm-Mr-Stuck-Up-My-Ass whiner, the general consensus was that the Kevin Butler appearance was pretty win. The Move, to me, looked competent enough to keep my attention, and the surprise stuff like Twisted Metal, Portal 2/Steam on the PS3, etc. were pretty good, but the pacing of the conference itself was a bit too erratic, and they COMPLETELY fucking neglected to even mention The Last Guardian, which is a big failure in my book. The awesome HD Sly Cooper announcement only partially makes up for it.

Microsoft, though, was a BIG embarrassment to the gaming community. The only thing the presser did was show everyone that their marketing folk are still stuck in 2006 wishing they could be the company that captured the casual market, like a 36-year-old unemployed man wishing he could still re-live his glorious high school football days. Their presser was, aside from being a BLATANT and shameless ripoff of Nintendo's marketing campaign, showed an incredible lack of focus and simply just lacked inspiration. The fact that they dragged Rare into making a generic Wii Sports ripoff is just flat out sad, and the fact that Microsoft CHOSE to copy Nintendo's '08 E3 presser (arguably the worst presser they've had in recent memory) just makes them seem completely out of touch with reality. It's like they were off in their own make-believe world where they were the first to capture the casual market by storm and that everyone gave a shit as to what they were doing. In reality, though, they wasted perfectly good tech with horrid mini-game compilations following a 4-year-old marketing campaign with no real plan for long-term use, embarrassing themselves in front of the gaming audience. Microsoft, you really jumped the shark this time.

I'll pretty much agree on this. I'll also say that Sony missing The Last Guardian was a painful hit for me.

I agree. I so darn agree with all of that.

Might wanna add that hardware also doesn't make the console (or so I heard, remember the whole DS vs. PSP thing back in the day?)

Yea, it's funny how the shoe is on the other foot now but you can just dismiss it because it's Nintendo or something. Not sure how that works either but you're right for bringing that up...especially since most are like 'well you don't need that great of hardware to make good games' on Nintendo's perspective most times. Now the 3DS is apparently an okay bit stronger than the current PSP...and by that only a little bit. The GPU clocks at 200MHz with a maximum overclock of 400MHz. The PSP GPU is 166MHz and has been around for five years. The fill rate is only a little better on the 3DS at normal clocks. The vertex rate is actually quite a bit slower on the 3DS than the PSP still. Perhaps because of the overall resolution that the 3DS is giving out (everything on the top screen is rendered twice).

Even still, it all boils down to games. If they're worth it for you, buy them. It should be you bought them over the fact that you've played the game ten times before or it's a wow gimmick that makes you jump on it. If you like it because you like it, that's all that really matters anyways.

I take offense to this one.

The gaming media apparently have seen this one "coming from a mile away" for at least the last 4-5 years.

It's been rumored milled the most for Nintendo at least.

I was more 'taken offense' that it was a 3DS title and not a Wii one. Most people I know felt the very same.

I guess you get it somewhere but still...

I'm not. I don't see how one could take offense to that. Nintendo is putting a good looking game on their handheld to sell it, and it makes sense.

I agree with Colin though. The gaming media always seems to say they see every Nintendo surprise a mile away, but not for the other two companies. It doesn't make a lot of sense to say the least.

I wasn't expecting Kid Icarus, Star Fox 64 3D, Resident Evil, or Super Street Fighter 4. Nintendogs? Yeah, I saw that coming, but even a 5 year old could.

I'm really surprised nobody is mentioning the new Pilotwings game, since everyone seemed to want one.
