So my dad's email address was the only contact in my yahoo account. He sent me a forward of an email that supposedly came from my email address but it was spam to some website about Viagra. At first I thought it was just a spoof address, but I checked my outbox and sure enough it was there.

I know its not from my computer being infected, its shut down every night and the sent times on the emails are around 4:30 am. Its not my blackberry (which is tied to my yahoo email), it has no record of those emails.

Can this be done automatically through yahoo or has my password been compromised? I've changed it and removed his email from my contacts which stopped it. But I want to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I would say that your password has been compromised...

Probably your computer isn't infected with spam bots, but it may be infected with a keylogger or similar, which could have got your password

Ways to avoid that to happen again...
- Clean your computer of viruses
- Run most stuff on a non-admin account, and only use the admin one to install stuff.
- Don't enter your password on websites like "tell me which msn contacts have blocked me"
- Don't use the same password for other websites or services...
- If you can, use linux. It's much more secure!

If your password really has been compromised (perhaps by a web-crawling bot via the Web mail interface) -- you might not be infected with anything), it could have just been a really simple or otherwise common password. Use strong passwords. :p

But yeah, probably run the standard gamut of malware scans and crap too.

My password was a combination of letters and numbers, nothing common. According to most of those "password strength" meters, its rated as strong. Hasn't happened again, most likely because I removed his email address from my contacts list. Still upsetting though that it was happening.

Your computer doesn't sound compromise, but rather sounds more like your father's is, and that maybe he has something that looks for and forwards spam to all of his contacts.

Regardless, try running some anti-spyware programs such as Spybot S&S. I've heard the Immunize feature can make a browser or computer slow, but try it out and see, and if it doesn't work, it has a handy undo feature.
