Yeah, because using a kill switch on the internet would not have really bad side effects.

It wouldn't work. I'd bet anything that it wouldn't work.

Now Joe Lieberman wants to give the President another weapon to use in the event of a national security crisis.

Joe, Joe, Joe...

Anyway I peg the chances at this ever seeing a serious vote at zero. You can all unbunch your panties now.

In addition to granting the President broad emergency powers, the legislation would also create a new bureaucracy called the National Center for Cybersecurity and Communications (NCCC) which would reside within Homeland Security. The NCCC would have at least two deputy directors and liason officers to the Defense Department, Justice Department, Commerce Department as well as the Director of National Intelligence.

Ooh, another completely useless Government department! Yes please.

You know, what they should focus on is creating more jobs... not shit like this. Like, don't they have anything better to do with their cash?

Yet they keep trying.

I suppose "revolution switch" would be a better name than "kill switch". Flip it and watch the people revolt.

Wait, would that work across the world? Of course, if this only shuts down all internet in the US, that means you wouldn't be able to access anything hosted there.

If it's across the world? Plain bullshit, a country doesn't have the right to do that even if you're called United States of America.

I presume it'd only shut down connections countrywide (which would be annoying as a lot of things are hosted there). I've heard someone with that much power wouldn't have much trouble taking out pretty much the whole thing, but they certainly have no right to try.

Sure, it would only take out sites hosted in America, but guess what? That's over half of Google's content. Oh, and probably Youtube.

The internet was made to be fault-tolerant.

Turning off the internet would be futile and self-defeating; people could establish their own network without the US's consent if they stayed off too long.

Isn't there a policy stated by an organization somewhere prohibiting something like what Joe is trying to pass?
