AIM started giving me warnings about how older AIM clients are soon going to be unsupported, and actually unable to connect to the AIM service. Trillian 3.1 is one of these clients that's considered "old", so I figured now was the time to upgrade to Trillian Astra, even though I wanted to wait a little more for the functionality to be ironed out more.

I keep getting uncomfortable feelings with it, even though I've more or less set everything up to be just like Trillian 3. It's got some nice features, but there are a couple of things that'll take some getting used to.

For example, the text input line now resizes itself when you type a lot of text, instead of scrolling. The name handles are now stuck in some pukey colors instead of being red for me, blue for other person, and I can't find any ways to change this. Lost connections will now endlessly try to reconnect, rather than trying 10 times and stopping. (though, this one isn't necessarily bad, it's just different)

Aside from that, I'm glad it lets me still use the whistler theme from 3.x, so it's not extremely different. Having the previous 10 lines from previous convos appear when a new convo starts? That's pretty nice too (can be turned off though).

The thing that bugs me is the Astra account though. Trillian isn't just a simple program that ties multiple IM services together anymore, it's now a service in and of itself. I guess it's nice to be able to access my multi-im stuff from the web, and not have to re-import my settings when I install trillian on a new computer, but it feels like I can do without that stuff, since I've already turned the sync stuff off, and it's just another server connection and chat protocol to deal with. Oh well, maybe CS can make this a little more optional with future releases.

Yeah, so far, it seems fine, but I still feel uncomfortable with it. Maybe that's just because of how long I've been using 3.1.

I use trillian astra when I'm in windows and it's pretty aaaaaalright. Could be better, could be much worse, but it works.

I also have a friend who agrees with you about the colors. They didn't really bug me but eh, the rest of the interface is so shiny and busy that I must've missed it. That's kinda the big thing that bugs me somewhat (though not terribly) is you can't use the standard windows controls (or at least something that looks close enough). I suppose there's a skin for that, but then I'd have to like, pay for it. :p

I haven't used Trillian in a long time... I prefer Pidgin now, since I've almost never had problems with it, or any nag screens, etc. =)

Miranda IM is neat. Even more so with the Modern Contact List making things look better and arrange better. If you're open to new multi-clinets, this one may work for you.

I used AOL's AIM for years, but when I got a new computer I switched to Pidgin. I had used it before though.

I've been using Pidgin for a long while. Trillian began getting clunky ever since they stepped from version 2 to 3 and I promptly jumped ship and checked out several multi-IM programs ever since. I did try Miranda IM but it didn't work out well at all for me. Something just didn't want to load correctly with the contacts I had. I will say it felt very lightweight, though (and I know Ace uses it). GAIM didn't do much for me. Digsby surely didn't do much for me. Tried a few others and Pidgin's been the best thus far for myself.

When you come down to it, Trillian Astra seems to be much lighter on resources than Trillian 3.x. I say this because Trillian 3 had constant pagefaults while it was running (a "pagefault" is when a program wants to access some of its virtual memory that has been swapped out to disk), and Astra keeps a tidy Pagefaults Delta of 0.

Plus, its Mem Usage seems a lot lower as well, so that's always a welcome change.

In addition, it can now properly reconnect to services after my internet comcasts out, whereas before, I'd need to actually tell Trillian 3 to disconnect and then reconnect before it would finally successfully reconnect.

I dunno, there are a few changes from T3 to TA that I'm still getting used to, but so far so good. Now let's just see what happens when my free trial of Pro runs out. :\ (Good thing I disabled all of the pro features anyway)

Open your Taskmanager, goto View=>Column-Selection then tick "page-faults".
Trillian is on top of every other application, running on 44 Threads, about 5.000.000 page faults for me.
Constantly incresing at about a few hundreds in a minute.
It's way over Photoshop or any other application. Some programmer really must have done something wrong.
And this is Trillian Astra I'm talking about, newest build.

Once trillian goes to access it, a page fault occurs because that data is no longer in RAM, and windows has to load it back off the hard drive. A high page fault count does NOT mean the programmers were bad.

Yes, this exactly, pagefaults come from the memory management of the operating system. Programmers have no control over it.

Also, keep in mind, that pagefaults counter in task manager represents how many pagefaults have occured since the program started. If you leave Trillian open for weeks at a time (like most people would, I imagine), then naturally it's going to have a pretty large "pagefaults" count, since that's weeks worth of pagefaults all accumulating to that total. The "Page Faults Delta" column is more useful.

Plus, Trillian 3.1 (what I was using before) used to have 4-5 pagefaults every second because of how much memory it used. Trillian Astra has a lot better memory usage.
