Yeah, I wouldn't mention that in any future interviews.

We had an old 486 that, after a while, would generally refuse to run a lot of games. I was rather bummed out at it. DOS games worked, but Windows games would usually completely freeze, very soon after they were started every time.

We bought a new computer to get ourselves away from those problems, and eventually we tried to boot up the 486 again at our new location. Turns out that the hard drive had only 6 MB free (out of, I believe, 514 MB). Windows uses the hard drive as virtual memory as it runs out, and I guess we ended up frequently running out of virtual memory as well as physical memory.

I remember having only a 300 MB hard drive... but since most of my files were text or spreadsheets, it didn't fill up quite as fast. (Many of my games could run directly from the CD, which is nice, but they would always clog up my Preferences folder after a while. =/)

Paulguy's Post configuration
Eh, I imagine we've all done that before. I did it once while downloading HD movies and wondering why the download would randomly just stop (I was using DC++, it doesn't report errors directly, just fails silently and sits there forever seemingly acting like it's some connection issue. Is it that hard to check the return value of fwrite?) until I tried to actually perform a file operation and getting an error about not having any disk space.

I did that once. Also somewhere have a screenshot of precisely 50% usage.

Oh god defragmenting.

It can be a nightmare. I've been running Defraggler on my mother's machine for the past three days and it's only at 13%. I've tried JkDefrag and Vopt, but those just... seemed to stall after a while.

My dad was telling me about when he first got a 1.2GB hard-drive: The Hard Drive Of The Future!

Now we've got 3.1TB hard-drives. Which I desperately want. Note: WANT, not NEED

From 1998 until 2004, I only had a 2GB hard drive... which wasn't even that much in 1998, either. When I got a boot sector virus in 2004, I decided to just get an 8GB hard drive instead... that one died in 2009, so I got a second-hand 20GB hard drive for that machine. =)

If that 20GB drive dies, I might just get a 32GB CompactFlash card and an adapter instead...

When i try to start up my old computer, it doesn't even show me the BIOS bootscreen anymore.
Makes me wonder how much crap i crammed in there.

The two very likely aren't related.

Bad CMOS battery or video card, most likely... could also be the motherboard. =P

I still don't understand your obsession with antiquated machines... then again, I don't understand people who like antique furniture, either.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Eh, it's good to have something that'll take an installation of windows 98 or something around with some serial or parallel ports.

Old PC hardware generally is pretty uninteresting beyond that, other than some really really early stuff, though. The only benefit to antique computers is collecting odd systems that have some kind of gimmick about them. Like those funky systems that had DOS and CP/M provided by an 8088 and z80 for example (would be cool if they could be used in tandem for extra speed if you wanted to write the software to do it. ).

As for antique furniture, the only benefit I could see is when it's often designed or built better (less cheaply) than modern furniture, and it has good designs. But to be honest, well built furniture is still available new for a price which may often be more than antique furniture if you're willing to look around.
