Solo teen sailor missing at sea

A rescue effort has been launched off the coast of Madagascar after emergency beacons onboard 16-year-old Abby Sunderland's boat were triggered when the young adventurer ran into huge waves hundreds of kilometres from land.

And I wonder why there was so much opposition to her doing it in the first place... maybe for reasons like this?

I hope she is found and is alright. I mean you can prepare for the worst but that doesn't mean the worst isn't bad anymore.

"Abby has all of the equipment on board to survive a crisis situation like this," he said.

"She has a dry suit, survival suit, life raft, and ditch bag with emergency supplies. If she can keep warm and hang on, help will be there as soon as possible."

It may be an extreme adventure and a lifelong desire she's wanted, but why the hell do people do this alone? Share the experience with someone. Its safer and more fun.

Wait, isn't that the part of the sea where there's lots of pirates, or something like that?

And would it have been that difficult to have another boat trailing her? It didn't even have to be within sight. 50-100 miles would suffice. Better than 500+ kilometers that the nearest boat was at.

I hope she's going to be ok...

She's alive and well but she did lose a mast a sails. Just poor timing with the extremely bad weather hitting her. A rescue boat is on its way, some 30 hours out still. She was 2000 miles from any land mass.

She was going in waters that casually sink cruise liners and terrified people like Ernest Shackleton, the man who slid down the side of a mountain once.

Common sense? What's that? Let's send children into the 30-foot wave meatgrinder of icy death! :specialed:
