| The push to 3.1TB drives and beyond is the driving force to this. It's not really surprising that a move like this would come full-circle to all motherboard manufacturers.
Sounds like it'll still essentially be what a BIOS is, just an updated one. |

At last, the mainstay that has been with IBM PC compatible computers since 1981 is finally being replaced. But then again, Apple were the first to use EFI, IIRC... so they thought different as early as 2006. =) ____________________ YouTube • DeviantArt Windows 98 forever! |

| BIOS will finally rest, hooray.
But we will never be rid of the pain and suffering. ____________________ My Youtube here Furry fan, doctor who fan, mario fan, sonic fan, and (insert awesome game here) fan. NSMB DS/Wii Hacker ![]() |

06-09-10 08:14:15 PM Post #3311 Hm, somehow I'm not wild about the idea of adding such complexity as a GUI to a crucial system component, that A) should be doing its job as fast as possible and getting out of the way 99% of the time, and more importantly B) needs to be 100% reliable. Get some obscure bug in your BIOS/firmware and you're screwed, and from the quality I see out of so many manufacturers and developers these days... ![]() ____________________ /!\ CANADIANS! And hey, bios viruses that were once practically impossible may become the norm! That would be just great. ____________________ |

Paulguy's Post configuration Well, I would hope the EFI firmware is mostly read only outside of some flasher utility, as it is now.
Currently, my motherboard has a similar system called ExpressGate, but I don't think it can be used as a typical EFI for booting an OS. It has it's own Linux thing. I think the best way to handle this would be to have a very minimal read only recovery ROM that loads the EFI firmware, or if you press a button or something, load in to a recovery flash utility to put a new firmware on if the existing one gets hosed somehow. As long as the recovery ROM has no bugs, it should be unbrickable... The biggest thing I could see this helping with is pushing Windows to FINALLY just COMPLETELY ignore the BIOS. I know 7 mostly is unreliant on it, but I've had it get incorrect data from the BIOS in the past (where Linux was just fine, because it doesn't seem to really probe the BIOS for anything unless you tell it to.) and cause me some annoyance. I hope this also makes BIOS configuration menus a bit more usable, and a bit less Engrish. If it's more editable, we could be seeing better internationalization, I just hope they don't completely rely on the mouse. ANOTHER thing that would be good is if given a large enough ROM (mine has 512MB but that'll probably be the exception, not the rule.) you could have a decent recovery linux with support for all kinds of filesystems, so people can actually, like, delete files in Windows out of the box before windows has a chance to load the virus and make the file unable to be deleted. ____________________ |

06-13-10 03:22:34 PM Post #3348 I would hope it's read-only, save perhaps for a few bytes of settings, unless a physical momentary pushbutton is pressed. But that would just make too much sense. ____________________ /!\ CANADIANS! READ! /!\ why not? |
