Quite the listing for the PSP and DS respectively.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy is on top for the PSP with 5+ million downloads estimated, topping the PSP list. Pokemon Platinum tops the DS list with about 2 million.

Considering that everyone probably owns about five copies of the same final fantasy game/pokemon game it's not that big a deal I think.

I'm kind of curious what rectum they pulled those numbers out of, to be honest.

That's what I'm wondering as well.

That and the whole 'losses' figure, which doesn't take into account used game sales and whatnot.

Unless they have some sort of online multiplayer where they can look at CD Keys sold vs fake key attempts or something, I imagine it is like just about every other piracy number and pulled out of a board meeting's collective arse.

"Losses" is (and has always been) a shifty figure for "piracy", simply because one download ≠ one lost sale.

It does make for big numbers, though!

Considering that people can download and forget, download and archive, download again because they lost it/deleted it, bots can count as hits, I'm pretty sure these numbers are skewed.

Most of the games I got a while ago for my PSP weren't ones I would usually buy, except for maybe Final Fantasy Tactics:The Lion Wars. So your logic is sound. But for some people, they only download ones they want which could mean a lost sale. But if they don't have the money to buy it in the first place, then its not lost. Just never would have been.

I downloaded D2PSP after buying it simply because CSO/ISO loading is faster than UMD :|

Yep, I downloaded the rom of Sonic Advance, back when it was newish and GBA emulation was still kinda young.

That inspired me to go out and buy the actual cart version of Sonic Advance for my real GBA.

So yeah, I really hate when staticians (by the way, fuck statistics and their dumbass STAT classes at colleges, it's all hogwash) make that equation. The only way a download would = a lost sale is if downloading somehow locked the user out from buying it later. As far as I know, I don't know any sites or stores or anything that does this.

My parents don't understand the concept of One Download != One Lost Sale. I tried explaining it to them for like, 45 minutes, and still lost the argument because they wouldn't believe me and in general think piracy is a bad bad thing. I guess the argument that if you can't pay for it you don't deserve to have it sort of does make sense.

I've downloaded a lot of games, but the vast majority of them were either duplicates of games I own(ed) or games that are no longer being manufactured (at least pre-Virtual Console), often both. So I wouldn't say I've cost the gaming industry too many sales

But yeah, if my CD broke, or the system and games are at my parents', or whatever, I'll just download it. It's more convenient to play on my computer, too

I think the easiest way you can demonstrate how piracy is not necessarily a lost sale is with Sonic Genesis. Nobody in their right mind should pay for that garbage, but everyone should give it a shot at least once (it's a great way to lower your expectations forever)

Even easier would just to show yourself downloading a game you already own.

That should convince most that are smart enough to deserve convincing.

Mhm, if I'd paid for every game/movie/show/song/program I downloaded, used once, said "man, fuck this" and deleted, I'd be bankrupt 12 times over. Just about every one I do buy, I then proceed to copy/download for backup purposes, and just about every CD I've bought, I bought specifically because I downloaded one or two of the songs and liked them. Boy I sure am a terrible pirate stealing from the authors like that huh?

Especially, I'm sure many people download copies of all their console games (easier than ripping) and play them from hard drives on their modded consoles. I don't trust the PS2 disc drive (and I worry about the Wii's as well), UMD is just retarded (some games don't even work because of the lag, yet run just fine from a nice fast memory card), and the convenience is undeniable. Then on top of that you don't have to worry about ruining your only copy.

Remember when VCRs were going to kill the movie industry?

(The delicious irony is that with newer consoles all having standardized disc formats, USB/SD/etc, and a kernel that prevents games from actually touching the hardware and OS, modding has gotten significantly easier. Remember modchips on the PSX and horribly expensive cartridge copiers? Compared to softmods and HD loaders that live in the kernel where the game can do absolutely dick all about them if it can even detect them. Nice going guys!)

My Megaman: Powered Up UMD was heavily damaged when the plastic window came loose, releasing plastic and glue shards into the case, which happily worked their way to the underside of the disc and proceeded to scratch the hell out of it. This all happened while the game was being carried in an officially-licensed padded UMD case.

I just downloaded the ISO after that incident. Like hell I was going to buy another copy.

Damn, that's a lot of downloads. Either those games are really good to the point that they warrant downloading, or really bad that people want to download it just to try it.
