Worst Memorial Weekend at the Movies in 15 Years

This past weekend was the most sluggish Memorial Day at the movies since 1995—a bad omen for summer business, since the May holiday is typically one of the bigger release frames. The Sex and the City sequel—ye of $153 million in 2008—wilted under the critics’ heat lamp So did Disney’s Prince of Persia, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and his pectorals.

Well, if you look at past Memorial day openings:

2009 - UP, Night at the Museum
2007 - Pirates of the Carribean, X-Men 3
2005 - Star Wars EP3, Madagascar
2003 - The Matrix: Reloaded, Bruce Almight
2002 - Star Wars EP2, Spider Man
2001 - Pearl Harbor, Shrek
1999 - Star Wars EP1
1996 - Mission: Impossible

Its hard to top some of those movie openings. There was nothing big this year. Sex and the City? I saw it (I live with 3 women in the house) and it wasn't anything to write home about. Shrek 4's 2nd weekend... bleh. I don't even care to see it until its out of DVD. Prince of Persia was visually impressive but also not note worthy besides that. But with inflated ticket prices, this is pretty sad for a holiday weekend box office.

There haven't really been movies to write home about period in the theaters for a while.

The last I went to see was Star Trek last year because it's that, JJ Abrams and actually wasn't half bad.

I will say, on that recent list, UP would work for me. That's one I've actually wanted to see.

I never even knew that Memorial Day was a big time to go to the movies, honestly.

Well if there was anything actually interesting playing, the prices were right, and the nearest movie theater wasn't 70 miles away, then yeah, I might've gone to one.

They should have waited and released Iron Man 2 on Memorial Day Weekend instead of Prince of Persia.

The entire month of May ranged from underwhelming to disappointing to flat out bomb in terms of box office.

This is turning into one of those summers where only a few gems show up and the rest of the movies are forgettable. And that is counting Iron Man 2 which wasn't bad. But it simply wasn't as good as it could've been.

Twilight Saga: Eclipse should help boost sales for the summer figures. It may end up being the biggest, too.

Other movies of note this summer:
A-Team
The Karate Kid
Toy Story 3
The Last Airbender
Predators
Resident Evil: Afterlife

I think the frontrunner is Toy Story simply because of what the previous one grossed + inflation + nostalgia + hype + 3D = will be greater than Eclipse which will be front loaded like New Moon.

I don't think Eclipse will out gross New Moon and if it does, it won't be by a great amount. Maybe an extra $20 million which brings it to $310 million. I think TS3 can out gross that.

Resident Evil movies are a wash. People watch them but they aren't great. They don't even pass $100 million. I'm hoping the A-Team does well. It looks like a typical fun action summer movie.

Eh, I think it's a toss-up between Eclipse and Toy Story 3... but I have a feeling that Eclipse will flop and Toy Story 3 will be the big movie of the summer. =D

Breaking Dawn, which will probably come out in 2011 or 2012, will probably gross more than Eclipse will... =/
