Several developers that have experienced 3DS in its current form have reported, off the record, that it has processing capabilities that far exceed the Nintendo Wii and bring the device with abilities that are close to HD consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. According to several developer sources, the 3DS device is not using the NVIDIA Tegra mobile chipset, a rumor that's been floating around since 2009. - IGN

I find that hard to believe. Nintendo making a handheld more powerful than it's most recent console? How much would that cost?


I can imagine it being PSP-level or so, but not that high.

It will do 3D models better than the PSP is my guess, but not on par with consoles. With the added 3D viewing feature, it will be a interesting experience.

You have to keep in mind that it has to broadcast the same image twice in order to create the 3D effect, therefore the graphics won't look like a game on one of the HD consoles. Unless, of course, games have 2 settings: 3D and high-res. Sad part is, I doubt it. Who would go for making the same game twice, much less making it twice for the same package.

Anyway, when I heard about the hardware over on IGN, my jaw dropped. Handhelds holding 3D games is still a new concept to me, but a handheld that's close to being on par with the HD consoles? I can't wrap my head around it. Honestly, just think of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: 3D edition on your 3DS. Or better yet, a port of Fallout 3 to the 3DS. Now THAT would be fucking legendary. Sadly, I'm pretty sure I'm only dreaming. But, you can't deny: it'd be a dream come true to play Fallout 3 or Oblivion on the 3DS.

*yawn* wake me up when 3d becomes something immersive like virtual reality. Call it lame, but going to the arcades back in the day and feeling like you're in an airplane or whatever simply is awesome. Consoles will truly reach a landmark when they can replicate THIS at home. Otherwise 3D is mostly garbage.

Eurogamer is echoing the same stuff from two other developers they know and that the earlier FCC board was in fact the 3DS board. One screen was wide screen, the other was DS sized.


"The information comes from Eurogamer, who say their info is from two independent, unconnected sources...

- once again, no TEGRA chip
- Japanese partner for the 3D acceleration hardware
- codename is "Nintendo CTR"
- this matches up with the FFC board picture from a few weeks back
- FCC board images may have been made public before they should have been"

I'm sure that more than one store is going to be selling the 3DS, in that case you can both be first in line at different stores...but if that isn't the case then you should both be prepared to stand behind me!

But on a serious note, I'm getting rather excited about the 3DS (because of every new feature that it's supposed to have with the exception of 3D ).

Anything other than a Tegra 2 is a mistake. It almost sounds like they're pursuing to be something like Apple anymore...and they're not necessarily the best when it comes to power at all either.

But hey, I'm not really holding my breath for the 'Nintendo CTR' to be higher class in power than what Sony or possibly even someone else rolls out with immediately afterwards.

Nintendo has made so much god damn money off this generation that they can easily afford to make a powerful beast of a handheld. And bets are good it won't be a retail failure, because 3D is already in marketing and being targeted at the common consumer. Nintendo is merely riding the wave to success.

It won't be a failure, but it'll be an interesting launch. Some people might hold out a while to see more in depth reviews. Its also gotta have a lot of titles immediately to be a really successful launch.

If they release it pre-holiday season rush, then yeah. It will sell out at first for die-hards that buy anything new Nintendo, but the units will really move during the holidays and probably be like the Wii was when it came out: the hard to find gift everyone wants. Which somehow makes it even more appealing, just because you have to hunt to find one.

Kotaku has compiled a lot of info on the 3DS and have made a simple mock up based on what they assume is more or less true information.

I dunno personally. I'd rather just wait until next week to see how it really goes down.

Unless they magically manage to manage to create a really amazing cooling system, having it as power as the current gen consoles isn't something I'd believe, considering that was the main problem with both the PS3 and the Xbox 360
