Apple launches HTML5 Showcase page

Apple has launched a new section of its Website dedicated to showcasing the capabilities of the next generation of Web standards that fall under the HTML5 umbrella.

Too bad it only allows you to see the HTML5 stuff in Safari. I don't really want to install another browser... They're really pushing this anti-flash thing.

And not only that, some of them you can't see unless you're running a Mac with Snow Leopard!

Didn't Microsoft do something similar to that a while back?

Yea, Silverlight...? I think that only works on Windows, IIRC... (but it DOES work on both IE and Firefox, at least... not sure about Opera or Chrome. =/)

Safari on my Mac has Silverlight installed.

Edit: Also note that the reason I specified Snow Leopard is because said features won't even work on OS X 10.5 (Leopard).

Except HTML5 really is (going to be) a standard.

Safari currently is the only browser that supports some of the more exotic things HTML5 can do. Of course, a few of those things should also be supported in Chrome or a developer build of the next version of Firefox too, but trying to visit the pages in either results in a redirect back to the html5 index.

I think either can be correct (Apple is a company; Apple are the people who work for that company). I think "Apple is" sounds better, though.

HTML5 for the win, but Apple for the lose... seriously, unlike Flash or ActiveX, HTML5 is supposed to be a standard. They claim that Safari is the only browser that supports HTML5, when in reality, Chrome and Opera do as well (Firefox 3.6+ does too, but I dislike Firefox...)

For the record, the part that I highlighted isn't actually correct.

As mentioned elsewhere, Apple is a singular entity, even though it's comprised of many people. The same goes for family, so you wouldn't say, "Family are the people you live with." You'd use "is" instead, and the same applies to this.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I don't think Apple has actually made this claim. Feel free to prove me wrong, though.

They just want you to think that, making you have to use Safari to see their HTML5 content.

Kinda contradicts the whole "Think Differently" motto, doesn't it?

Hah. Hahah! Nuts to that.

*Gets the browser-agent spoofer plugin to check it on out*

Haha, those Apple liars. My Firefox can use what they have there--though I have to thoroughly disable their redirects, spoof the user agent, and beat the thing over the head so their attempt to hide that other browsers can do it fails.

Well actually I had to download and edit some files to make it work, but whatever.

Implied by restricting it to only be shown if you use Safari.

Nobody doubts that, but restricting this kind of shit to just a "superior" browser is the kind of shit that happened in 1999.

wtg apple.

Also, just to shut everyone up and prove this is a dick move:

The demos only work on the most recent versions of Safari that can be found on Mac, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices. Users of other browsers — including those based on WebKit, the same underlying HTML rendering engine used by Apple's browsers — are directed to download Apple's browser.

Yeah, I saw an rant about that somewhere.
Here it is: "Intellectual honesty and HTML5". Kind of interesting.

It's pretty stupid that they basically say "If you don't get our browser which supports it, we won't show you" :|

See above, I hacked it to work in Firefox.

In fact, if someone out there wanted to be a dick, they could download it, change the browserjs thing to not detect the user agent at all, then host it on their own server.

It doesn't fully work in my older version of Firefox, but their "Safari-only" tangent is all whitewash to hide the fact that they, most likely, programmed it in a way that only works 100% in Safari, regardless of what actual HTML5 is.

Edit: Opera can do it too. Possibly better than my old version of Firefox:

Fail. If they had any sense, they'd realize that this pointless restriction only reduces the effectiveness of their demo. You want to kill Flash? You could say "basically all web browsers now can use this open standard, thus making Flash redundant", but instead they're saying "replace Adobe's proprietary plugin with our proprietary web browser that can do pretty well the same thing". Derp.

Flash will die when HTML5 video stops being such a clusterfuck and SVG stops being so goddamn slow to render (thus making animation actually feasible). (Being able to play dynamically-generated sound wouldn't hurt either... ) All Apple is doing is being Microsoft 11 years ago, trying to switch people to their browser so they can then proceed to fuck it all up and severely damage the web for decades to come. IE6 MkII. Yay.

See, Apple? You do not need Safari for those pages to work fine! At least it's not like ActiveX... anyone remember that? At least that has died out... I haven't seen anything that has used ActiveX in a long time... =)

ActiveX could also eject your floppy/CD drives, install a truckload of malware on your computer, and even shut down your computer. Glad HTML5 isn't capable of doing that...
