Logitech Replaces Harmony Remotes with Free Apps for Google TV

Logitech's Harmony remotes are among the most acclaimed, most popular programmable remotes in the industry. But in a forward-looking move, Logitech is turning Harmony into a free iPhone/iPod/Android app to work with their Google TV companion box.

This is actually really cool. Who needs a remote that you always lose when you can just get out your cell phone that you always have with you? Soon, you'll be able to control your whole house from your phone.

Popular, my foot. I never sold a damned one when I worked tech for over a year. Everyone bought cheap.

Like this...this will actually be used now.

Too bad its only for Google TV so far, but more TVs are integrating web and things like bluetooth into their units these days. Could be just around the corner for apps like this that control it without IR.

Paulguy's Post configuration
It would be nice to see devices have some kind of RF based signaling for remote control. IR is inconvenient, especially with some setups where you have stuff in a cabinet or another room.

Bluetooth could be good as long as devices could keep a proper sync to each other without constant need for communication or power draw. It's nice being able to control stuff on the wii with the wiimote and not having to bend over to try to point it straight at it, but the wiimote either has to always stay on and draw power or there's several seconds of sync time before you can use it (and even then it can be unreliable whether it decides to sync at all...).

Dish networks's boxes use an RF remote which is nice, but this is all just a hopeless pipe dream. IR is cheap, so we're stuck with it from here on out. The best we'll see is requiring some kind of master control box and taping IR blasters to everything, and still end up with the odd remote that it won't work with or can't "teach" for some obscure reason.
