Five six, niner, ten...

I never understood the need for niner. Why is said as niner?

Well, the ICAO has changed many times.

Probably because Mike and Nine are close in terms of what you might hear over the radio (for the letter M instead of 9).

I guess so, but these days its clear enough to hear nine. Unless they think they're speaking German and saying "nein"...

I think it's because 5 and 9 sound too similar, so military/aviation people say "fife" and "niner" to help distinguish them.

It's like how they use that Alpha, Bravo, Charlie stuff instead of just A, B, C, as many letters sound similar to each other.

Yea... I liked that Feist song, back when it was used in the iPod Nano commercial a few years ago. =)

I was going to say that I know so many people who use this as their PIN (or variants of it thereof, like 4123 or 4321) that it's sad. Same with internet passwords, what with 123456 still getting quite a bit of milage ... at least until some sites started enforcing better passwords as a rule.

One of my friends told me his password for something a few years ago. It was 12345698. I never understood why he did that, but I've done a mix of letters and numbers for a long time now.

I used to use words, sometimes made-up ones, spelled in reverse as passwords, or words with numbers interleaved as in ba3na2na, as directed by my parents. Now I'm likely to use a random password generator or convert a phrase unintuitively into a password (like, sometimes the first letter, sometimes the last, sometimes how many letters, sometimes a random punctuation mark).

For PINs, I try to come up with them in similarly obscure ways and commit the digits to memory.

Paulguy's Post configuration
When you're calling some horrible outsourced Indian customer support, you still need such things. Between the line noise and the lack of English speaking ability, that's what it generally becomes. :/

So true. I called something one time and got an outsourced call center. They asked for my email... f - as in frank, f - as in frank, a o r - as in robert, l - as in larry, a n - as in nancy, d - as in david, u @...

That was the worst. I think I had to repeat myself twice to get it through. Kept thinking it was supposed to be orlando and not orlandu.

Yeah, I hate having to give my E-mail address verbally. The place I'm staying at in Seattle apparently heard "terrabramford93" and never confirmed my reservation via E-mail. Then, they read it "Terr Abram Ford", like a car dealership.

When had to say my email address in a bank (gsanky@gmail.com), they even asked me to spell out the first part. And made a remark about "kids and their crazy email adresses". Guess what I ended up with?

Oh come on, it's not hard to remember a couple strings of 32 random characters.

My favourite password fail is Twitter's server password being "password". Close behind is a forum whose administrator's password was "notpassword" - but he smartened up quick.

At least with my email address, the "eternal" part isn't messed up... although on occasion, I sometimes get "shala" instead of "schala". =/

I imagine someone might use "internal" for the first part

Usually I just spell out my E-mail address if I have to give it verbally, but it does have 13 letters and 2 digits in the part before the @, so it gets awkward and mistake-prone.

Paulguy's Post configuration
It's annoying trying to verbally give an email address. Even something simple like paulguy is screwed up.
