That's probably not the best move they could have made.

It's a supposed theory that they'll be introducing Light Peak technology on their boards before USB 3.0 gets a chance. I'm not sure if it's because they're seeing LP being better than USB 3.0 or what the deal is but it doesn't really make any sense that they'd delay something like this for 1 1/2 years when USB 3.0 devices are becoming more readily available now and board manufactures like Asus and Gigabyte have already adopted them months ago.

That seems like a really bad move, and I highly doubt that this light peak technology will be able to put a dent in the USB share.

Eh, let them be stupid I guess, and let's just not buy their motherboards until 2012.

They know USB 3.0 will cause the end of the world in 2012, and want to stop it before it's too late! :specialed:

But seriously, though, stupid move, Intel.

USB 3.0 isn't really necessary. Current speeds of USB 2.0 are enough for me. But I guess if you use USB storage a lot then it would be worth it, but obvisouly you won't get one any time soon.

Actually, with a PCIe USB 3.0 card and compatible storage media you could be cruising at top speed relatively quickly.

Hmm, I had wondered why the USB 3.0 controller on my motherboard was a separate NEC part. Oh well, as long as the manufacturers are compensating for it for us, it's not a big deal.

Yea, for those that can build a comp or are crafty enough to know what a PCIe x1 slot is and know it's in their system, you can fix the problem for yourself.

The problem is ready-made systems that are sold in retail. That's what's miffing a lot of people because they can't buy just straight Intel parts to make things work (and, subsequently, cheaper).

So it's that much harder for a company to just slap a PCIe card in for a year or 2? I'm pretty sure they already make a great profit on the systems the OEMs do make, the need to throw a PCIe card in each computer will probably only cost some upper management a luxury yacht or 2.

It might just be. I mean that's one less part to manufacture when you're shipping out a whole bunch of them.

Well, there are motherboards with them. Higher end ones but, well, give the customer what they're paying for, And I imagine in a few months because of this announcement, more low end boards will probably be seeing USB 3.0 controllers.

My laptop doesn't have it, so I won't see it for at least another 2 years or until I upgrade. It's hard to convince my wife to upgrade less than every 2 years. Not that I use my USB for much more than mice and keyboards. I don't use storage devices through USB.
