Article 1
Article 2

Cue heavys "OH THIS IS BAD" here. Basically, Harper & Co. want to implement a US-Style DMCA, despite that in all the consultations with Canadians, people were UNANIMOUSLY AGAINST IT.

This is just horrible. I'm going to strongly, strongly urge any Canadian members of this board to write to their Members of Parliament against this.

Here's a simple two-step form to have a letter made for you Please consider using it, as well as writing letters and mailing them off as well. Something this important can't just be left for other people to handle, it's too important to ignore!

Again? How many times do we have to shoot this bullshit law down before it stays dead?

That site would probably be a lot more effective if there were any way to get past the "choose a language" page. Why does nobody know how to design websites anymore?

Here in the United States, the DMCA survived through the Bush administration without being repealed... and it doesn't seem like the Obama administration is any different, sadly... (mainly because of RIAA/MPAA/ESA bullshit... =/)

It's like the 21 drinking age... MADD, state DMVs, and the insurance companies just want to force the administration to keep it 21 instead of lowering it to 18, because they claim that "lowering the drinking age to 18 will cause more DUIs." I mean, in Europe, DUI is far less common, because people learn better about alcohol at a younger age. And some pregnant women in Europe have their occasional glass of wine, and the baby just comes out fine! I mean, sure it's bad in excess, but I wouldn't encourage a pregnant woman to drink like 10 vodka shots in one sitting...

I mean, the 21 drinking age has survived through 4 presidential administrations without anyone repealing it... this shows how ridiculous this government is... =(

I'm sorry, how is this at all like the legal drinking age? There's a bit of a difference between "the government isn't convinced that letting people drink 3 years sooner will be good" and "a law is being proposed that will let the RIAA/MPAA decide everything you can do with media you pay for".

Not so much the government as the people living under the government. They'll complain for a while and then go about their business like they usually do eventually and not raise much of a fuss. Most people aren't willing to give their local government a call in that regard. Even then, it isn't like the person in charge goes with the thoughts of the people that elect them into a place of office, whether at state or government level.

So that leads to a lot of apathy and not caring what gets passed anyways over time. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened and every aspect of your life gets controlled.

Also, I find it interesting how they seem to go after the movie and music pirates more often than software pirates... maybe because the government doesn't particularly care about going after 10+ year old operating systems or games... =P

I mean, if sites like WinWorld, Vetusware, and Macintosh Garden haven't been C&Ded and taken down, then sites with movies or music shouldn't be either...

Let's make Canada an US State.

Because whatever US corporations say, we follow...

Might as well go live in Europe.

Europe's not necessarily better. Certainly not England Air Strip One, where Big Brother is quite literally watching.
