Kno dual-screen tablet appears at D8

Kno promised to launch a double-screened Linux-based e-reader designed for students at D8, and the undercover startup didn't disappoint -- believe us when we say it came out in a big way. That's big as in freaking big: the Kno reader features dual 14.1-inch capacitive IPS displays (1440 x 900 each), weighs 5.5 pounds, and offers six to eight hours of battery life, all in a package that's so comically large we thought it was a joke when we first saw the press shots.

I think tablets are here to stay, netbooks are being ousted. I would prefer one of these over a netbook any day. 5.5 lbs is a little heavy but not terrible. Some text books weight much more than that.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Heh, looks neat. I don't like the habit companies have of removing physical buttons, though, but I could see it being particularly difficult to add a keyboard to that and still be able to type in all modes. But, yknow, a dpad, few buttons, shoulder/back buttons, couple control sticks and it'd be perfect for use in class.

I understand the desire to keep tactile input, as its the most precise. But touch screen technology is the current trend, so everyone is jumping on board. I don't mind it, I used the iPad and it was easy to navigate and type. So with a few more developments they will be even more comfortable to use.

I still think tablets are a poor excuse for a netbook replacement (which themselves are a poor replacement for portable computing)

The best thing you can do for a tablet is really just provide a dock that offers you the full keyboard/mouse setup. Basically a stand and a compact keyboard. Hell, you'd even be able to just reach up and do what you need on the screen without dealing with a mouse.

Best of both worlds.

Exactly. Thats what they did with the iPad. If you need to do heavy typing, use a real keyboard. Even a Bluetooth keyboard would be great, which some phones can do already.
