Paulguy's Post configuration So I've had my current monitor for a couple years, a Sony KDL-32XBR6. But for the whole time I've been dealing with this annoying incompatibility with computer signals. From what I've gathered, the TV seems to make some kind of differentiation between a "computer" signal/device and a "television/video" signal/device. The difference in handling seems to be that the television signal goes through all kinds of processing, and in the end looks rather poor, while the computer signal is just displayed pixel by pixel.
The issue is the only way to get the TV to identify the signal as a "computer" signal is to either use Windows (I prefer Linux, don't recommend using Windows...) or to use the ATI FGLRX drivers which have all kinds of problems that pretty much everyone else seem to have anyway. The xf86-video-radeonhd drivers have the same blurriness problem no matter what I do, and it's been a couple years and I've pretty much tried every adjustment or setting possible, even messing around in the source code for the video card driver itself; there seems to be nothing I can do without knowing what arbitrary specification the TV uses to determine what is a computer device and what is a video device like a blu-ray player. So anyway, I want to get a new monitor to use, and probably just use this as a TV downstairs or something. I want to get something with a comparable size (~32", I don't want to go much bigger, but ~30" is fine.) because my vision isn't that great and I want to be able to see/watch it from my bed, and a picture that is at least as good. Price isn't a huge issue but I don't want to go much over $2000. There are some monitors that are ridiculous like $5000-6000 but I'm thinking that the difference between that and a $2000 monitor is kinda minimal and I don't really need the 16 bits per channel stuff. I've done some shopping and found one kinda cheaper one and one more expensive one, and I'm really not sure if the more expensive one is really worth that much more... it's really hard to tell since no stores anymore really seem to carry much for computer monitors, especially higher end stuff. Cheaper one More expensive one I doubt I'd get the NEC one unless I find out it's really a good deal for picture quality. So basically, should I get one of those? Anyone have any other recommendations, given my guidelines? ____________________ |
