AT&T Unveils Data Plans to Help Manage IPhone Demand

AT&T will offer a basic 200-megabyte plan for $15 a month, and a 2-gigabyte package at $25 that includes 10 times as much data, the Dallas-based company said in a statement today. The 2- gigabyte plan replaces an existing $29.99 plan for iPad customers, which has no limit on data usage.

What a load of shit. "We can't fix our sluggish network so we'll disguise data caps as cheaper plans and get more money from people who go over..."

Glad I'm sticking with Sprint and their true unlimited coming out for the EVO 4G and only $10 a month.

Yea.

Definite reason I don't invest in a smartphone with AT&T or do anything data with them.

Honestly, I think they could care less about their crappy infrastructure as long as it gives them an excuse to cap data for profit.

So will this apply to new customers or will old ones be forced in to 2gb per month. I know I regularly use more than that..

I may have to get a new phone sooner than I wanted. Good job driving away customers.

Some more details on Engadget.com

Looks like you can keep the $30 plan with 5GB cap, but to get tethering you will have to get the $25 and play $20 extra.

Essentially, don't get AT&T if you don't like hemorrhaging money.

Hmm, I suppose the 5GB limit is reasonable but still crap for $30. I don't need officially supported tethering which doesn't work in Linux anyway, I have a crack for that which works in basically any *nix and Windows.

I'll ride it out until my contract is up in about a year and switch carriers.

We were at the store today and mentioned we were returning my wife's iPhone because of the new data plans announced. They said that any current users lock in $30 unlimited, but if you ever want to do tethering (if its added to the iPhone) or do it with a different phone, you have to switch to one of the new capped plans.

This really sounds like it's going to put off a lot of (future) iPhone users, just because... well, honestly, who has a decent data plan that doesn't go over that kind of absurd cap?

Half the fun of using the phone is knowing that you can do literally anything with it wherever and not be charged extra (minus SMS and calls because lol, AT&T)

AT&T is ridiculous... they've been ripping off customers for years, perhaps even decades. We can only hope that the new AT&T gets split by the FTC or goes bankrupt within the next few years...

Only problem is that Sprint / Verizon suck major balls over where I'm at for reception. If it wasn't for that, I likely would have ditched AT&T a long time ago. I sold phones for both Sprint and AT&T for over a year and could tell you who had the better customer support, phones, etc. (Sprint) but it generally boils down to coverage being the number one option and service being second. Billing and phones are only close behind.

But regardless take a look at this shit.

Some guy inquires about the iPhone 4G to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson...two e-mails later he gets a cease and desist threat. They've apologized but he's jumping ship for Sprint and the HTC Evo.

Well, at least he's jumping ship for something better. I read about that yesterday. I can understand the cease and desist was taking it a bit far (and it wasn't ordered by the actual CEO) but how many people try to email the head of a company when there are other routes to take? The CEO is not the person you bring a complaint or inquiry to first, there are departments and other people for that.

If I'm reading it right, it looks like he had to talk to the top brass because the people didn't know what to tell him in terms of the 4G.

Not sure how he got up there to begin with as it is.

Wow, that's just unbelievable. What the hell has to be wrong with you to treat someone like that? I can't stand people.

It seems conspiracy theorist though they delayed the iPad 3G so that it would have to use the new capped data plans. But that was squashed, at least for anyone who orders before June 7th. Sucks for them, as the iPad uses much more bandwidth, being more about internet that phone.
