So I've had my current monitor for a couple years, a Sony KDL-32XBR6. But for the whole time I've been dealing with this annoying incompatibility with computer signals. From what I've gathered, the TV seems to make some kind of differentiation between a "computer" signal/device and a "television/video" signal/device. The difference in handling seems to be that the television signal goes through all kinds of processing, and in the end looks rather poor, while the computer signal is just displayed pixel by pixel.

The issue is the only way to get the TV to identify the signal as a "computer" signal is to either use Windows (I prefer Linux, don't recommend using Windows...) or to use the ATI FGLRX drivers which have all kinds of problems that pretty much everyone else seem to have anyway. The xf86-video-radeonhd drivers have the same blurriness problem no matter what I do, and it's been a couple years and I've pretty much tried every adjustment or setting possible, even messing around in the source code for the video card driver itself; there seems to be nothing I can do without knowing what arbitrary specification the TV uses to determine what is a computer device and what is a video device like a blu-ray player.

So anyway, I want to get a new monitor to use, and probably just use this as a TV downstairs or something. I want to get something with a comparable size (~32", I don't want to go much bigger, but ~30" is fine.) because my vision isn't that great and I want to be able to see/watch it from my bed, and a picture that is at least as good.

Price isn't a huge issue but I don't want to go much over $2000. There are some monitors that are ridiculous like $5000-6000 but I'm thinking that the difference between that and a $2000 monitor is kinda minimal and I don't really need the 16 bits per channel stuff.

I've done some shopping and found one kinda cheaper one and one more expensive one, and I'm really not sure if the more expensive one is really worth that much more... it's really hard to tell since no stores anymore really seem to carry much for computer monitors, especially higher end stuff.

Cheaper one
More expensive one

I doubt I'd get the NEC one unless I find out it's really a good deal for picture quality.

So basically, should I get one of those? Anyone have any other recommendations, given my guidelines?

I would not shell out that much for a monitor. You can shave 3" off and save $1000 or more. 27" is still quite large:

ASUS 27" - $359
HP 27" - $369

Or if you really want something big anyway, just get an actual TV. Many of the new LCD TVs still look really sharp when connected to a PC through HDMI. I connect my laptop via HDMI to a 60" projection HDTV and it looks really good, except for the coloring but I can adjust that. I would suggest a 1080p TV for the sharpest quality.

Samsung 37" $719

The 27" I think would still be enough for you and much cheaper. Hell, if you have the cash to spend, buy the 27" monitor and the 37" TV, lol. I wouldn't recommend forking out over $1000 more for a monitor just because its 3" larger.

If you shop around, look for brands like ACER, ASUS, and HP. They are all good quality and tend to last. All my ACER monitors have lasted 2-3+ before I sold them in working condition, so they've probably lasted longer.

Well, I have this problem with pretty much ALL cheaper monitors in that they're always very yellow. Even macbook pro monitors are yellowy. I kinda want to steer away from using TVs, too, to avoid this computer/television signals problem, and 37" is too large for the space I have. I really want to stay in the 30-32" range and I want a picture that is at least as good as the one I have now (when it's displaying images properly.), which is pretty much one of the best looking LCDs I've seen yet. Very little yellowing, and what's there can be adjusted out in the menus, decently bright. The one complaint I'd say is that on primarily dark scenes, the greyish blacks are pretty noticeable when watching at night. I think 5" smaller than I have now would even be pretty noticeable and cause trouble when watching from my bed.

I really wish there was a way I can see the picture on all these monitors before buying because I'd hate to buy it, then have it end up looking like crap and have to lose money on restocking and stuff.

Also it's hard to go by reviews because on one end you have people who will say the monitors look good, but they really don't because they just don't really pay much attention to detail, but on the other end you have people who will say a monitor is good just because it's expensive, or they're one of those weird audio/videophiles.

Mine was $250 and it's incredibly white, it's like getting Solar Flared right in the face when you just woke up!

Anyway, look at LED monitors. Instead of turning the liquid crystals to the side to filter out light to kinda create a black (it makes it gray) they just shut off individual diodes, making a true black. I've had almost no grays while watching HD movies! Another perk is that they consume less power and emit almost no heat.

I've heard that OLED monitors are absolutely amazing and they just might be within your price range.

The "LED" monitors aren't really LED, rather LED backlit LCD. And the largest OLED monitor available is 15" and only in Europe. I've been doing a lot of research in to OLED monitors and while I'd certainly like to wait on them, I estimate it'll be about 2 years before they're the size I want, and maybe longer to get any bugs worked out and the price to not be absolutely ridiculous.

So I got an expensive HP LP3065 and it sucks without the color profile which doesn't work in Linux. And it'd suck WITH the color profile because of crushed dynamic range (though it seems most people don't notice that problem... I know I would.), so I guess I'll just have to sell it off.

Just leaving this here in case someone wants a new large format monitor.

So now I'm back to the old Sony, which while it bleeds at least produces a reasonably accurate picture otherwise.

Here's another candidate for you... but its still HP. Its not that much more expensive and has 1.07 billion colors vs 16.1 million. May be worth a shot.

I think I'll just wait for the quirks to be worked out of oled. Those shouldn't have the seemingly inherent discoloration issues of LCD monitors.

I really don't want to throw away money on something I can't sample on person and I figure stores will carry oled displays once they're reasonably big and stuff.

Most retails stores don't carry large format PC monitors though. Some of the large ones, like Frys here, might but I know Best Buy's biggest is like 24" and ridiculously priced.

I imagine most OLED displays starting out will be televisions, so I'll just make sure to bring a laptop with DVI out, an nvidia chipset and linux and see how it goes as far as picture quality from a computer.

They have large format televisions at breast buy.
